Modelling Landscape Dynamics
This book offers a comprehensive exposition of the mathematical methods that can be used to model landscape dynamics. It is systematically shown how mathematical models of progressively higher complexity can be derived from ordinary landscape maps and related data in ways that enable researchers to predict future landscape transformations and to assess landscape stability, sustainability and resilience.These models are deterministic (i.e. linear or non-linear systems of differential equations), stochastic (i.e. Markovian), or combined deterministic-and-stochastic (using stochastic differential equations), whereas topics and challenging problems related to complexity (spatial randomness, chaotic behaviors, riddled systems etc) are also examined in the book.
The Social Construction and Use of Landscape and Public Space in the Age of Migration
With the rare researches that focus on the cross-cultural aspects, this book tends to investigate how Arab immigrants construct and use landscape and public space in Berlin as a host city. The approach of social constructivist landscape research is chosen to highlight the effects of past and present in their experiences, including the effect of home and childhood period, social and cultural background, previous and current migration experiences including the level of integration and patterns of settlements, the importance of networking including the sense of community and groups and shared interests, as well as place attachment, and hybridization. Biographical semi-structured interviews with 72 Arab immigrants in Berlin were conducted, in addition to both participant and site observation.
Collective Actions of Solidarity against Food Insecurity
This book analyzes the issue of food insecurity in Europe. It highlights the role played by cities in promoting resilient, solidarity-based and food and nutritionally safe communities. The focus will be on three different local initiatives in Rome, Barcelona and Athens and on the relations between civil society and local public institutions in order to tackle with the food insecurity challenges. The research is aimed at understanding the paradox of food insecurity in wealthy societies. The focus will be on three European countries: Italy, Spain and Greece. An in-depth analysis on collective actions of solidarity to tackle food insecurity, will assess whether the initiatives are capabilities-oriented or merely compensating for shortcomings. Moreover, the contributions to the definition of a new food policy “by” and “for” the cities will be highlighted.

Alpine Industrial Landscapes
This Open Access book presents a pioneering research on brownfield redevelopment in mountain regions, and specifically in the European Alps. The origins and causes, the actual conditions as well as the future challenges and potentials of mountain brownfields are investigated from an interdisciplinary yet landscape-centered perspective. Through the reasoned combination of research-by-design methods and case-study analysis, the book explores the infrastructural relevance of these sites for the specific mountain territory, while advancing an innovative structuralist-systemic approach for their physical and functional transformation. The book includes, among others, a first transnational geo-mapping of Alpine brownfields, whose impressive outcomes in terms of site numbers and distribution can only confirm the urgency of this research. New Spaces for Climate Change
Vera Köpsel investigates the relevance of local perceptions of landscape and nature for the current topic of adaptation to climate change. She highlights the influence that differing conceptualisations of landscape among actors in environmental management have on their perspectives on climate change and adaptation. Qualitative empirical data from Cornwall (UK) constitutes a valuable foundation for an enhanced theoretical understanding of societal constructions of landscape and their implications for local negotiation processes. Using the example of coastal erosion, the author discusses how contrasting perceptions of a local landscape can significantly complicate consensus‐finding around physical‐material adaptation measures.
Residential Change and Demographic Challenge
Going beyond the assumption that East Central European cities are still 'in transition' this book draws on the postsocialism paradigm to ask new questions about the impact of demographic change on residential developments in this region. Focussing on four second-order cities in this region, it examines Gdansk and Lódz in Poland and Brno and Ostrava in the Czech Republic as examples and deals with the nexus between urban development and demographic change for the context of East Central European cities. It provides a framework for linking urban and demographic research. It discusses how residential areas and urban developments cope with changes in population development, household types and different forms of in- and out-migration and goes on to explore parallels and differences in comparison with broader European patterns. This book will be useful to academics of urban planning and development especially in transition areas, Central and Eastern European studies, demographics and population studies, and sociology/social exclusion.
