Navigating Children’s Literature through Controversy
This collection focuses on the specific issue of controversy as a cross-sectional aspect of contemporary children’s and YA literature, in a spectrum stretching from national experiences, to explore the impact of specific historical, economic and social environments on the rise of controversies; to inter-national exchanges in which controversies are generated specifically by the interactions between cultures; to international contexts that deal with controversies relevant on a global scale. By adopting controversy as an adjustable lens for a joined consideration of literary themes, narrative or aesthetic solutions, translation choices, publishing and marketing decisions, and discursive practices, the volume establishes a diversified collection of chapters that offers new insight into functions of children’s and YA literature in contemporary culture.
De kunst van het missen
Hoe welvarender mensen zijn en hoe meer mogelijkheden ze hebben, hoe sterker ze zich bewust kunnen raken van gemis in hun leven. Legden mensen zich in het verleden neer bij de mores van een levenscyclus, nu willen velen uit het leven halen ‘wat erin zit’, meemaken ‘waar het echt om gaat’, deelgenoot worden van wat Norman Mailer ‘the sweet of life’ noemde. Begrippen als ‘bucketlist’ en ‘fomo’ vinden we inmiddels ook in Nederlandse woordenboeken terug. Eén van de gedaantes van de moderne mens die zoekt naar vervulling is De Reiziger. Aan de hand van het gedrag van reizigers brengt Volkskrant-journalist Olaf Tempelman in kaart wat bevoorrechte mensen in hun leven missen, en waarin moderne maatschappijen tekortschieten. Over de hele wereld ziet hij reizigers zoeken naar liefde, verlichting, bevlogenheid, geborgenheid en meer. Hij ziet óók dat er veel voorbijgaat aan mensen die niets willen missen. In een boek waarin hij reisimpressies met contemplaties mengt, pleit hij voor de kunst van het missen.

The Gift from Berlin
Retired forest manager Andreas Landewee is a reluctant witness to history, having survived both World War II and the Soviet occupation of Germany. When his wife Elizabeth dies, he decides to leave Europe and live in a cabin deep in the woods of British Columbia. Landewee sees this move as a chance to start a new life. But without realizing it, he begins to re-create his old one. He imports trees from Europe. He invites his children to join him in Canada. He frantically awaits keepsakes from home, including Elizabeth's most prized possession -- a piano given to her by her hero and admirer, Adolf Hitler. Yet despite these inescapable ties to the past, Landewee tries to make good in his new home. He renews his relationship with his son, befriends his neighbours, and defends his adopted forest. With time, he slowly begins to explore the memories carried within the piano, and -- through the beauty of Beethoven's Ninth Symphony -- finally comes to realize that only by accepting the past can he move towards redemption.
