This book presents methods to study the controllability and the stabilization of nonlinear control systems in finite and infinite dimensions. The emphasis is put on specific phenomena due to nonlinearities. In particular, many examples are given where nonlinearities turn out to be essential to get controllability or stabilization. Various methods are presented to study the controllability or to construct stabilizing feedback laws. The power of these methods is illustrated by numerous examples coming from such areas as celestial mechanics, fluid mechanics, and quantum mechanics. The book is addressed to graduate students in mathematics or control theory, and to mathematicians or engineers with an interest in nonlinear control systems governed by ordinary or partial differential equations.
"Devotees of G.M. Malliet and Charles Todd will enjoy this different and delicious series." --Booklist Commissaire Capucine Le Tellier and her husband, a renowned restaurant critic, are frequent and privileged guests of Paris's cultured society. Unfortunately, a more refined milieu doesn't keep unsavory behavior like murder off the menu. . . When the body of acclaimed Chef Jean-Louis Brault and a shotgun are discovered in an antique Louis Vuitton portemanteau, the general consensus is suicide. Brault had been understandably distraught, if not quite unhinged, amidst rumors that his restaurant La Mère Denis might lose its rare third Michelin star. But when Capucine investigates the scene of t...
The British South Africa Company and the irregularity of its financial and political operations are dealt with in detail. Keppel-Jones also discusses the development in the midst of the indigenous population of an alien white society and state, from their crude beginnings to their emergence in a form still recognizable today. The reader is led to conclude that by 1902 Southern Rhodesia was already set on the road that would lead to the upheavals of the second half of the twentieth-century. The author examines the racial consciousness and prejudice of the white society and addresses an important question: why did the imperial government grant a royal charter to the BSA Company? The facts show...
The Cesnola Collection of antiquities from Cyprus preserves the island’s artistic traditions from prehistoric through Roman times and represents the first large group of ancient Mediterranean works to enter the museum’s collection. This publication which focuses on Ancient Glass and is the third volume in a series aimed at publishing the collection in its entirety. This catalogue contains descriptions and illustrations of 520 glass vessels and objects. Although the majority of the glass is Roman, the scope of the collection extends from the Late Bronze Age through the end of antiquity (ca. 1500 B.C.– A.D. 600). It is the first attempt in over a century to provide a detailed account of the ancient glass found on Cyprus by Cesnola.
Previously published as The Perfect Happiness Wonderfully wise Santa Montefiore will capture your heart with this "bittersweet and thought-provoking"* novel about a modern wife who must ask herself, Would I risk everything for love? A wife who has forgotten her own beauty and allure. A distant, distracted husband. A smart, candlelit dinner party, witty conversation, and a charmingly rugged vineyard owner from South Africa. So begins Santa Montefiore’s powerful and poignant new novel in which a woman who finds herself in a common predicament must confront the most unlikely aspects of herself. "I hope you don’t mind my writing to you," begins the first e-mail bestselling children’s book ...

This monograph explores the modeling of conservation and balance laws of one-dimensional hyperbolic systems using partial differential equations. It presents typical examples of hyperbolic systems for a wide range of physical engineering applications, allowing readers to understand the concepts in whichever setting is most familiar to them. With these examples, it also illustrates how control boundary conditions may be defined for the most commonly used control devices. The authors begin with the simple case of systems of two linear conservation laws and then consider the stability of systems under more general boundary conditions that may be differential, nonlinear, or switching. They then ...
Understanding cooperative phenomena far from equilibrium is one of the fascinating challenges of present-day many-body physics. Glassy behaviour and the physical ageing process of such materials are paradigmatic examples. The present volume, primarily intended as introduction and reference, collects six extensive lectures addressing selected experimental and theoretical issues in the field of glassy systems.
