This textbook is the first to offer essential information on the ores and basic properties of the majority of chemical elements, together with the most important industrial minerals, their latest applications and recycling options, illustrated with a wealth of photos. This book represents the culmination of a comprehensive project jointly pursued by the Valentí Masachs Geology Museum and the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) (Polytechnic University of Catalonia) over the past several years. Published in response to multiple requests from university professors and other educators, it will promote a new society in which human beings use the Earth’s natural resources responsibly and with respect for the environment. Keep in mind that we aren’t the only inhabitants of the Earth, a wonderful but depletable planet!

Aquest llibre és fruit de la petició de professors, alumnes i visitants del Museu de Geologia Valentí Masachs de Manresa (UPC) de disposar d'un material que parlés del tema central del museu (les aplicacions dels elements i dels minerals) i l'ampliés. Ens hi hem posat i ara us el presentem. Desitgem que us sigui molt útil i que us ajudi a prendre consciència del lligam amb la Terra, que necessitem. I de la qual hem de fer servir els recursos geològics, si bé d'una manera sostenible al màxim, per nosaltres mateixos i per les generacions que vindran després de nosaltres.

Polifacètic o ubic són alguns dels adjectius que es dediquen a Josep Maria Mata Perelló (en Mata) al llarg d’aquest llibre. Investigador, professor, divulgador o militant de la geologia, la mineria i el seu patrimoni són també algunes de les facetes que en podríem esmentar. El llibre que us presentem n’és una bona mostra. En ell, companys i companyes d’en Josep Maria l’acompanyen en un recorregut per la seva trajectòria, que inclou aspectes com la petjada que ha deixat a l’Escola Politècnica Superior d’Enginyeria de Manresa (EPSEM), la defensa del patrimoni geològic i miner, els recorreguts geològics o els seus viatges i actuacions a l’Amèrica Llatina. I fins la que és, possiblement, la seva faceta menys coneguda: la de poeta. Entre el reconeixement i l’homenatge, textos que parlen d’una figura que no tan sols forma part de la història de l’EPSEM, sinó també de la història de la geologia del nostre país i de més enllà de l’Atlàntic.
Prison of Women
Prison of Women presents oral testimonies of women incarcerated following the Spanish Civil War. The primary voice in the collection, Tomasa Cuevas, spent many years in prisons throughout Spain as a political prisoner. After the death of Franco in 1975, Cuevas began to collect oral testimonies from women she had known in prison as she traveled throughout Spain recording their stories. These, along with hers, eventually were published in three volumes in Spain. Prison of Women is a collaboration between Tomasa Cuevas and Mary E. Giles, translator and editor, who wrote the introduction and afterword, and provided contextual information in notes and a glossary. The testimonies offer a compelling record of the years leading up to the Spanish Civil War, the aftermath of that horrendous struggle, and a revealing testament to the strength of the human spirit.
Vitrification and Geopolimerization of Wastes for Immobilization or Recycling
Miguel Hernández University is hosting the VITROGEOWASTES 2017 international workshop, due to be held from 14 to 15 September in Elche (Alicante-Spain). Over what are expected to be two intense days, discussions will be centred on a series of topics of enormous interest connected with vitrification and geopolymerization of waste for immobilisation or recycling. We’ll be listening to internationally renowned speakers who are leaders in these fields. We’re also going to be expanding our knowledge in discussions based on more than fifty scientific papers due to be presented in the panel sessions. XIII Premio Ciudad de Badalona de Narrativa XVII Premio Solsticio de verano Situada en la actual comarca del Matarraña, en una demarcación de la provincia de Teruel dentro de la Franja de Poniente, se extiende la Escresola, una región poco conocida cuyos habitantes, antes de la guerra civil, mantenían un sistema de vida rural centrado en las masías, tenían sus tradiciones y hablaban una lengua propia. Silvestre Hernández nos transporta a la época en que las masías de la Escresola rebosaban de vida; lo hace mediante un personaje, Oriol Puig, un huérfano que en el año 1918, cuando Barcelona vivía atemorizada por las bandas de pistoleros financiadas por la patronal y replicadas desde los sindicatos, huye del hospicio donde residía para iniciar una vida azarosa en la calle que un buen día le conducirá hasta la Escresola, donde comenzará una nueva vida.
