Health literacy and disease prevention, volume II

This Research Topic is a follow on from the Topic Editors' successful volume I. The term “health literacy” was coined by Ratzan et al. in the 1970s providing the minimal health education required in schools, however this term is almost new and in the early phase of development. Though many attempts have been made in the past to define health literacy, WHO construed it as “the cognitive and social skills which determine the motivation and ability of individuals to gain access to, understand and use information in ways which promote and maintain good health.” Health literacy not only focuses on the individual behavior oriented communication but also on the various determinants of health such as environmental, social, and political factors, thus it is ahead in the concept of health education. If health education methods go beyond the bounds of “information diffusion” and bring about interaction, participation, and critical analysis, such kind of approach will lead to improved health literacy, personal aid, and social benefit by enabling adequate community action and contributions to the advancement of social capital.

Mental Health in Healthcare Workers and its Associations with Psychosocial Work Conditions

The work environment can be considered one of the main determining factors that can influence the mental health of workers, especially as it regards the structural and organizational conditions to which the worker is subjected. This work environment has positive effects when work provides satisfaction and well-being or negative effects provoked by situations of stress, inadequate working patterns and schedules, possible situations of abuse and/or harassment, etc., which may contribute to the appearance of alterations in the mental health of the worker.

Hard Rain: A Vin Cooper Novel 3

When the US Attache to Turkey, Colonel Emmet Portman, is found butchered in his Istanbul residence, Special Agents Vin Cooper and Anna Masters are sent to investigate. Within days of their arrival, Portman's associates begin to die gruesomely. There's a serial killer at large. But there are inconsistencies. Why does one murder appear to have religious symbolism, while the next doesn't? Why do the slayings appear to have been executed with military precision? And why has Portman's email inbox been tampered with and whole days' worth of communications apparently wiped out? Nothing is making a hell of a lot of sense to Cooper – not least, Anna's plan to marry JAG lawyer Colonel Richard Wadding, known to everyone who has ever come into contact with him as Colonel Dick Wad. Cooper and Masters find themselves hunted, smacked around, shot at, buried alive and blown up from Turkey to Iraq, to Egypt to Oak Ridge. It would be helpful if they were on speaking terms.

Covid-19 Global Vaccination Drive: The Goal of Equity in an Unequal World

The Covid-19 vaccination rollout has been slow in many parts of the world, and it might not be inaccurate to say that the newer, more transmissible variants have done a better job at immunising populations than the vaccine. More than 16 months since the global vaccination drive was started, wealthier countries have inoculated vastly higher proportions of their populations compared to the poorer ones. For example, as of late April 2022, the United Arab Emirates has administered 266 doses per 100 people; and Haiti, with a comparable total population, is at 2.3 doses per 100 people. Even when numerical disparities are high, however, a comparative country analysis might conflate equity with pari...

Moving for Prosperity

Migration presents a stark policy dilemma. Research repeatedly confirms that migrants, their families back home, and the countries that welcome them experience large economic and social gains. Easing immigration restrictions is one of the most effective tools for ending poverty and sharing prosperity across the globe. Yet, we see widespread opposition in destination countries, where migrants are depicted as the primary cause of many of their economic problems, from high unemployment to declining social services. Moving for Prosperity: Global Migration and Labor Markets addresses this dilemma. In addition to providing comprehensive data and empirical analysis of migration patterns and their i...
