The increases in global wealth and the developments in the field of health have led to decreases in mortality rates, increases in life expectancy, and decreases in fertility rate, leading to a population that is rapidly consisting more and more of older individuals. The demographic changes affect nearly all parts of society including economics, education, health, social security systems, socio-cultural activities, and more. Globalization is a multi-dimensional concept reflecting the increased economic, social, cultural, and political integration of countries. There has been no pinpointed consensus on the history of globalization; however, the globalization process has gained significant speed as of the 1980s in combination with liberalization. Many countries have removed or loosened barriers over the international flows of goods, services, and production factors. In this context, both liberalization and globalization have led to considerable institutional, economic, social, cultural, and political changes in the world. The liberalization and globalization processes have affected economic units, institutions, cu...

The Informal Economy and Islamic Finance

The characteristics, nature, determinants, and size of the informal economy differ from country to country. While much research has been carried out in the context of advanced economies, less attention has been given to developing countries, especially those in the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) nations. This is one of the first books to investigate Islamic finance’s stance on the informal economy and to discuss it from an OIC perspective. It covers the various definitions, historical development, types, and determining factors behind the shadow economy and the reasons for people’s preference to join and stay in the informal economy. Similarly, different theories are discussed...

In the modern world, solid and liquid waste deposits are mounting due to increasing populations and wealth. Businesses are therefore being put under pressure to pay attention to the environmental and resource consequences of the products they produce and the services they deliver. The Circular Economy and Its Implications on Sustainability and the Green Supply Chain is a collection of innovative research on methods of extending biological cycles found in nature to technological cycles where goods, when disposed properly, are converted into new products in an environmentally efficient way. It examines current research on how to deal with the waste resulting from human activities, the relationship between environmental and human health, and international legislation on waste management. This book is ideally designed for economists, managers, practitioners, academicians, researchers, and students.

After the initial discussion of the background and methodology of their excavation, the successive levels are carefully described and fully illustrated. The earliest I...

Democratization and the Politics of Constitution-making in Turkey

The Turkish experience in constitution-making can be described as a series of missed opportunities to create political institutions based on broad consensus. None of the three republican constitutions (those of 1924, 1961, and 1982), nor the Ottoman Constitution of 1876 was written by a Constituent or a Legislative Assembly broadly representative of social forces or through a process of negotiations, bargaining, and compromise. Consequently, they all had weak political legitimacy. No doubt, the prospects of EU membership provided a powerful stimulus for these constitutional reforms as well as the nine harmonization packages. With these reforms, Turkey has sufficiently satisfied the Copenhagen political criteria and started accession negotiations with the EU. It would be wrong to assume, however, that these reforms were simply an outcome of Turkey's desire to join the EU. They also responded to the society's demands for a more democratic and liberal political system. Book jacket.
