Algebraic Groups: Structure and Actions

This volume contains the proceedings of the 2015 Clifford Lectures on Algebraic Groups: Structures and Actions, held from March 2–5, 2015, at Tulane University, New Orleans, Louisiana. This volume consists of six articles on algebraic groups, including an enhanced exposition of the classical results of Chevalley and Rosenlicht on the structure of algebraic groups; an enhanced survey of the recently developed theory of pseudo-reductive groups; and an exposition of the recently developed operational -theory for singular varieties. In addition, there are three research articles containing previously unpublished foundational results on birational automorphism groups of algebraic varieties; sol...

National Integration in Indonesia

National Integration in Indonesia

Indonesia's great size and diversity and its history of regional dissension have made its struggle for national integration particularly complex. Christine Drake presents an informed and balanced picture of past and present developments in this struggle, offering readers a realistic assessment of the current status and future prospects of national integration in Indonesia. By addressing historical, political, social, and economic issues in conjunction with statistical analysis, Professor Drake argues that the spatial pattern of integration is far more complex than the commonly accepted core-periphery model of Indonesian integration and development. The author examines the effectiveness of Indonesian government policies in promoting national integration and concludes that in general they have led to greater national unity, although many serious problems remain.

Oxygen Transport to Tissue XI

The Ottawa '88 meeting of the International Society for Oxygen Transport to Tissue attracted a record number of participants and presentations. We were able to avoid simultaneous sessions and still keep the scientific program to four days by using poster sessions followed by plenary debate on each poster. To paraphrase the British physicist David Bohm, we tried to avoid an ordinary discussion, in which people usually stick to a relatively fixed position and try to convince others to change. This situation does not give rise to anything creative. So, we attempted instead to establish a true dialogue in which a person may prefer and support a certain point of view, but does not hold it nonnego...

Arguments and Reason-Giving

Arguments figure in our everyday practices of giving reasons. For example, we use arguments to advance reasons to explain why we believe or did something, to justify our beliefs or actions, to persuade others to do or to believe something, and to advance reasons to worry or to fear that something is true. This book is about our uses of arguments to advance their premises as reasons for believing their conclusions, i.e., as reasons for believing that their conclusions are true. What, exactly, is involved when you successfully use an argument to advance the premises as reasons for believing the conclusion? Philosopher Matthew W. McKeon suggests there is more involved than one might think.
