T Cell Hybridomas

T Cell Hybridomas

For more than ten years cell fusion techniques have been applied in studies on various lymphocyte functions. Ig expression was first studied in hybrids obtained by fusing myeloma cells with fibroblasts (1) or lymphomas (2), both of which do not produce Ig, and with Ig producing myelomas (3) or human blood lymphocytes (4). Kohler and Milstein (5) fused a myeloma with spleen cells from immunized mice. Up to 10% of the hybrids obtained secreted antibodies specific for the immunizing antigen. This suggested that plasma cells preferenti ally fused with the myeloma cells, a finding which was of enormous practical value. It was found that both Band T lymphocytes could be fused with the T cell tumor...

Spectroscopy of Solid-State Laser-Type Materials

This book presents an account of the course "Spectroscopy of Solid-State Laser-Type Materials" held in Erice, Italy, from June 16 to 30, 1985. This meeting was organized by the International School of Atomic and Molecular Spectroscopy of the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture. The objective of the course was to present and examine the recent advances in spectroscopy and theoretical modelling relevant to the interpretation of luminescence and laser phenomena in several classes of solid-state materials. The available solid-state matrices (e.g. halides, oxides, glasses, semiconductors) and the full range of possible activators (transition ions, rare earth ions, post-transition ions...

Natural Cell-Mediated Immunity Against Tumors aims to be the first book to provide a comprehensive discussion on natural cell-mediated immunity against tumors. This book is mostly a collection of different research contributed by leading laboratories. It also presents a better perspective of how natural mechanisms fit in with and relate to the traditional and more extensively studied components of the immune system. The book starts off with an overview of the contents of the volume – the historical development of the advances in the field of research and the status of knowledge in the subject area. Divided into four major sections, the book consists of a total of 98 chapters. The sections discuss the natural killer cells and related cells and the natural lymphokine production. This book also explains the natural macrophage and granulocyte cytotoxicity. The book will be a helpful reference for students, professionals, and researchers in biology, immunology, biochemistry, microbiology, and other related fields.

Symposium in Immunology VI

This is the sixth symposium in a series of symposia on immunology organized by IMMUNO covering this time tumor immunology. This volume deals with T cell recognition and CD95-associating signaling, clinical investigations: cells, costimulatory signals and therapeutic approaches: cytokines and vaccines.

By the end of the 1970s, crystalline lasers were widely used in science, engineering, medicine, and technology. The types of lasers used have continued to grow in number to include newly discovered crystalline hosts, previously known compounds generating at other spectral wavelengths, and broadband tunable stimulated emission. This has led to the creation of an extremely promising new generation of crystalline lasers that are both highly efficient and more reliable. The major part of this book is devoted to describing multilevel operating laser schemes for stimulated emission excitation in insulating crystals doped with lanthanide ions. The first part of Crystalline Lasers deals with the his...

Autoimmune Liver Disease

Autoimmune Liver Disease

No standard pharmacological treatments have been developed yet for the diseases, which are expected to become more prevalent because of growing rates of exposure to a increased variety of xenobiotics from diets, medicines, and the environment. Immunologists, biochemists, pharmacologists, and clinicians here share their understanding of the disease's etiology and relation to extra-hepatic factors. Among basic mechanisms of pathogenesis they consider are tolerance and autoimmunity, receptor-mediated experimental hepatic apoptosis, and lessons from animal models. The clinical aspects discussed include genetic aspects, natural course and long-term outcome, the distinction between autoimmune and viral liver diseases, and immunosuppressive therapy. The 12 papers were presented at a January 1997 workshop in Konstanz, Germany. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

This new edition of Van Kampen's standard work has been completely revised and updated. Three major changes have also been made. The Langevin equation receives more attention in a separate chapter in which non-Gaussian and colored noise are introduced. Another additional chapter contains old and new material on first-passage times and related subjects which lay the foundation for the chapter on unstable systems. Finally a completely new chapter has been written on the quantum mechanical foundations of noise. The references have also been expanded and updated.

This monograph deals with diverse applications of holographic interferome try in experimental solid mechanics. Holographic interferometry has experienced a development of twenty years. It has enjoyed success and suffered some disappointments mainly due to early overestimation of its potential. At present, development of holo graphic interferometry is progressing primarily as a technique for quantita tive measurements. This is what motivated us to write this book - to ana lyze the quantitative methods of holographic interferometry. The fringe patterns obtained in holographic interferometry are graphi cally descriptive. In the general case, however, because they contain infor mation on the tot...
