The Colloquium at Wiesbaden was the seventh in a series organized by the Societe Universitaire Europeenne de Recherches Financieres (SUERF) at intervals since 1969. The titles, places and dates of previous Colloquia are noted on page ii, with brief particulars of the ensuing publications. From the beginning, the emphasis has been on money and finance in a European setting, and the most recent Colloquium, held in Wiesbaden for the three days beginning on September 29, 1977, followed this well-established pattern. This book provides a unique survey displaying the power of Riccati equations to describe reversible and irreversible processes in physics and, in particular, quantum physics. Quantum mechanics is supposedly linear, invariant under time-reversal, conserving energy and, in contrast to classical theories, essentially based on the use of complex quantities. However, on a macroscopic level, processes apparently obey nonlinear irreversible evolution equations and dissipate energy. The Riccati equation, a nonlinear equation that can be linearized, has the potential to link these two worlds when applied to complex quantities. The nonlinearity can provide information about the phase-amplitude correlations of the complex quantities that cannot be obtained from the linearized form. As revealed in this wide ranging treatment, Riccati equations can also be found in many diverse fields of physics from Bose-Einstein-condensates to cosmology. The book will appeal to graduate students and theoretical physicists interested in a consistent mathematical description of physical laws.
1.1 Some characteristics of the floating exchange rate system The flexible exchange rate system has functioned far less satisfactorily than many anticipated in 1973, when the major industrialized countries decided to let their currencies float. The dominant currencies' exchange rates have fluctuated more 1 than expected. These fluctuations concern both short-term movement- intraday fluctuations and movements during a week or a month - and long term changes that last for more than a year. An international symposium on Monetary Conditions for Economic Recovery was organised in Amsterdam from 14-16 November 1984 by the Department of Macroeconomics, Faculty of Economics of the University of Amsterdam, to honour its distinguished member, Professor G. A. Kessler, who had recently retired from his Chair of Monetary Econo mics. Experts on monetary theory and monetary policy from various parts of the world took part in the discussions on both the theoretical and practical aspects of the theme. The papers have been collected in this volume. Our debts in organizing the symposium and preparing this volume for publication are many. The symposium was financed through the support of a number of sponsors whose names have been listed on the next page. The Netherlands Bank accommodated the conference sessions. The organizing Committee owes much to the successful efforts of its members Jean Morreau, Casper van Ewijk and Annette Deckers. This book constitutes the reviewed proceedings of the Fourth International Workshop on Algorithmic Aspects of Wireless Sensor Networks, ALGOSENSORS 2008, held in Reykjavik, Iceland, Wroclaw, Poland, July 12, 2008.
