Hollywood and Broadcasting

"Michele Hilmes has produced an excellent introduction to a most important subject. This is an invaluable work for both scholars and students that places film, radio, and television within the context of the national culture experience." --- American Historical Review "Hilmes is one of the few historians of broadcasting to move beyond a political economy of the media. . . . Her work should serve as a model for future histories of broadcasting." --- Journal of Communication "All media historians will find this work a critical addition to their bookshelves." --- American Journalism "A major addition to media history literature." --- Journalism History

French Painting in the Seventeenth Century

  • Categories: Art

Recent studies and exhibitions, combined with the discovery of work by hitherto little-known artists have enabled Merot to take a fresh look at the period and to suggest a new configuration. The great names of the period - Poussin, Vouet, Le Sueur, de La Tour, Mignard - are located in relation to other developments. Merot includes discussion of the impact of contemporary literature and political, philosophical and social influences. The foundation of the Royal Academy of Painting in 1648, and the influence of Mazarin on artistic developments are considered with other issues of status, patronage and connoisseurship. The book provides a panorama of the period; the text is profusely illustrated in colour, and accompanied by a comprehensive bibliography.

Where Do the Parties Stand?

This book analyses the politicization of immigration and the European Union in Italy, the UK, and the European Parliament (EP) from 2015 to 2020. The book uses the case studies of Italy, the UK, and the EP to study party positioning specifically towards immigration and the European Union, to understand to what extent mainstream-left, mainstream-right and populist parties adopt different framing strategies to compete on the new cultural dimension created by globalization. The book draws on saliency theory, issue ownership theory, and yield theory to investigate the multidimensional nature of political competition, and the relevance of institutional settings in determining party framing strategies. Bridging two fields that typically do not interact—party politics and migration studies—this book fills gaps in the academic literature and as such will be appropriate for students and researchers interested in party politics, European politics, immigration politics, populism, and text analysis.
