Religion has played a very important role in India from remotest times. It has moulded the individual life and has greatly influenced the social and cultural life also. In fact in India religion has been an inseparable part of the life of an individual as also of the society as a whole. There is religion to believe that even in pre and Post-historical man pursued some religious practices or the other though it is difficult to find out their exact nature. Right from the Vedic day's religion has served as the foundation of social and cultural life of the Indian people1. The Chalukyas were a Scythian race, and derived their origin from one of the four classes of Buddhist followers called Chailaka'. They claimed their descent from Manu through Hariti, and were known as Agnikulas, from their devotion to the worship of fire. They were included in the thirty-six races of the Kshattriyas, and belonged to the lunar family.

Eventually, While Remaining Resident, Kirkpatrick Converted To Islam, And According To Indian Sources Even Became A Double-Agent Working For The Hyderabadis Against The East India Company. Possessing All The Sweep Of A Great Nineteenth-Century Novel, White Mughals Is A Remarkable Tale Of Harem Politics, Secret Assignations, Court Intrigue, Religious Disputes And Espionage.
Empire and Information
In a penetrating account of the evolution of British intelligence gathering in India, C. A. Bayly shows how networks of Indian spies were recruited by the British to secure military, political and social information about their subjects. He also examines the social and intellectual origins of these 'native informants', and considers how the colonial authorities interpreted and often misinterpreted the information they supplied. It was such misunderstandings which ultimately contributed to the failure of the British to anticipate the rebellions of 1857. The author argues, however, that even before this, complex systems of debate and communication were challenging the political and intellectual dominance of the European rulers.

Ernst's research, based on rare Persian manuscripts preserved in Sufi shrines in the medieval town of Khuldabad, a major center of pilgrimage in the Indian Deccan, reveals the mystical teachings and practices of the Chishti Sufi order as taught by the ecstatic Shaykh Burhan al-Din Gharib (d. 1337) and his disciples. Marathas and the Maratha Country' : under this general theme we have already published two books of Professor A. R. Kulkarni, namely (1) Maharashtra in the Age of Shivaji and (2) Maharashtra Society and Culture. We are now introducing his four books under the same series containing reasearch articles based on orginal source and published in various journals. They are (i) The Marathas (1600-1818), a brief survey, (ii) Medieval Maratha Country, essays throwing fresh light on the various aspects of land and people of the region, (iii) Medieval Maharashtra containing essays on Village Communities, social relations, jiziya etc. and (iv) Studies in Maratha History which also includes articles of some other foreign and Indian scholars on Maratha historiography.
Encyclopedia of Primitive Tribes in India
These two volumes make a comprehensive and analytic anthropological study of 63 major primitive tribes of India in an alphabetical order. The material on these primitive tribes has deep bearing on micro-study gathered from the writings of the reputed academicians. The Bibliography with regard to these volumes is fairly comprehensive.
