Dementias

To a certain extent the dementias have been forgotten diseases until just recen tly when they were brought to the attention of the general public and health authorities as a result of the increasing number of cases in the aging popula tion, especially among famous people, and because of the efforts of private foundations. The goals of the present volume are to present the dementias to health prac titioners, to provide some basic information on their epidemiology and biolo gical basis and to discuss the diagnostic and clinical problems that physicians and institutions face when caring for demented patients. This book explores the various types of dementias and is not limited to Alzheimer's di...

This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 5th Computational Color Imaging Workshop, CCIW 2015, held in Saint-Étienne, France, in March 2015. The 17 revised full papers, presented together with 5 invited papers, were carefully reviewed and selected from numerous submissions. The papers are organized in topical sections on color reproduction, color sensation and perception, color image processing, spectral imaging, and color in digital cultural heritage.

Towards Evolvable Hardware

Evolutionary computing, inspired by the biological world, is one of the emergent technologies of our time. Being essentially a software activity, it has been successfully applied, e.g. for optimization and machine learning in various areas. The tremendous increase in computational power and, more recently, the appearance of a new generation of programmable logic devices allow for a new approach to designing computing machines inspired by biological models: it is now possible to make the hardware itself evolve. This book is based on a workshop on evolvable hardware, held in Lausanne, Switzerland, in October 1995. It reports the state of the art of research in this field and presents two introductory chapters, written with the novice reader in mind.

This volume contains the proceedings of the Latin American Theoretical Inf- matics (LATIN) conference that was held in Buenos Aires, Argentina, April 5–8, 2004. The LATIN series of symposia was launched in 1992 to foster interactions between the Latin American community and computer scientists around the world. This was the sixth event in the series, following S ̃ ao Paulo, Brazil (1992), Valparaiso, Chile (1995), Campinas, Brazil (1998), Punta del Este, Uruguay (2000), and Cancun, Mexico (2002). The proceedings of these conferences were also published by Springer-Verlag in the Lecture Notes in Computer Science series: Volumes 583, 911, 1380, 1776, and 2286, respectively. Also, as before,...

Painting the Past with a Broad Brush

For over 50 years, J. V. Wright was a ground-breaking leader and inspiring mentor for the Canadian archaeological profession. This publication brings together 23 scholarly articles on various aspects of Canada’s ancient past that pay tribute to and reflect J. V. Wright’s diverse geographic and cultural interests in relation to Canadian archaeology and pre-history. This exceptional festschrift includes an annotated bibliography of J. V. Wright’s works.

In this book Professors Pablo Martínez de Anguita and John E. Wagner put two disciplines together, regional and ecological economics, presenting a way to understand ecological economic concerns from a regional perspective, and providing a mathematical tool to measure their interrelationships. This book offers different regional economic models that explicitly include the role of the natural resources and pollutants in economic regions through the use of Social Accounting Matrixes and Input-output models. The main objective of this book is to explore Input-output and Social Accounting Matrix (SAM) models by expanding the accounts to include natural resources and the environment. The proposed models in this book incorporate the forest and other natural resources and pollutants as a component in a larger model of how the economy and environment of larger areas interact. This book will be of interests to postgraduates, researchers and scientists in the fields of regional, resource, environmental, or ecological economics.
