With original case studies of a more than a dozen countries, Monarchies and decolonisation in Asia offers new perspectives on how both European monarchs who reigned over Asian colonies and Asian royal houses adapted to decolonisation. As colonies became independent states (and European countries, and other colonial powers, lost their overseas empires), monarchies faced the challenges of decolonisation, republicanism and radicalism. These studies place dynasties – both European and ‘native’ – at the centre of debate about decolonisation and the form of government of new states, from the sovereigns of Britain, the Netherlands and Japan to the maharajas of India, the sultans of the East Indies and the ‘white rajahs’ of Sarawak. It provides new understanding of the history of decolonisation and of the history of modern monarchy.

Abdul Kadir, lahir pada tahun 1771 di Sintang, Kalimantan Barat. Terlahir dari keluarga bangsawan kerajaan Sintang dari pasangan Oerip dan Siti Safriyah. Pada tahun 1845, Ia ditunjuk sebagai pemimpin wilayah Melawai dalam kekuasaan Kerajaan Sintang menggantikan sang ayah yang meninggal dunia. Usianya saat dinobatkan sebagai Raja Melawai telah menginjak 74 tahun. Namanya setelah penobatan berubah menjadi Abdul kadir Raden Tumenggung. Posisinya sebagai Raja Melawai sangat membuatnya berada pada posisi dilematis, satu sisi Ia harus tunduk kepada pemerintahan Raja Sintang yang telah tunduk kepada penjajah Belanda, namun direlung batinnya sangat menolak untuk bekerjasama dengan Belanda.

Against the backdrop of tacit and overt conflicts between religious groups in Indonesia, this study examines the potential role of religion in building trust between people. To what extent does religion induce or reduce trust between Muslims and Christians? While religious communities are important socialising agencies for moral principles that may encourage trust, religious identification may also be related to distrust towards others; making 'trust' a problematic issue in the context of interreligious relations.
