Kaupang in Skiringssal
In this, the first of six volumes, the main results of the excavations that the University of Oslo carried out at Kaupang from 1998 to 2003 are presented. A completely new picture is put forward of the port that Ottar visited in c.890. It is now clear that Kaupang was one of the four Scandinavian towns that were founded around the year 800. Kaupang is connected to the power centre of Skiringssal, to the Ynglings - the legendary Norwegian royal lineage, and to the King of the Danes - the dominant political actor in south-west Scandinavia. Vikings Across Boundaries

The Making of Kingdoms
Rather than debate location and specifics, this collection concentrates on the interconnections and resonances of kingdoms. Papers were drawn from the 47th Sachsensymposium (York, 1996) and address areas around the North Sea and Baltic. This volume examines general models and research agenda derived from archaeology and history; the search for kingdoms on the ground (control and mobilisation of resources through economic, social and territorial organisations) and identifying kingdoms of the mind. Though many of the papers are thematic, regional interests are still well-represented in pieces ranging from Frisia (Heidinga and Gerrets) to Middle Anglia (Hines) and Denmark (Axboe).
Beowulf and Lejre
Tradition places the main action of this Old English poem at Lejre, Zealand (Denmark), and excavations there 1986-88 and 2004-05 have revealed a succession of great halls dated from the middle sixth to the late tenth centuries, and very similar to the one described in eight-century poem. Archaeologists, historians, and literary scholars consider the implications.
Särpräglat
This thesis takes as its subject the Viking-Age and early medieval coin finds from South Scandinavia (i.e. Denmark and the provinces Scania, Blekinge and Halland in southern Sweden). The study consists of two parts. The first part is an analysis of regional variations in the distribution of coin finds from the investigation area. The second part is a catalogue of recorded coin finds from South Scandinavia from the period c.800-c.1130 (about 70,000 coins from 692 finds). The regional variations are mainly studied through hoard composition and the distribution of coins with diverse origins. The study is therefore based on a wide range of material, comprising coins of Islamic, Carolingian, German, Anglo-Saxon and Scandinavian (Nordic, Anglo-Scandinavian and Danish) origin.
