This book critically investigates the origins and consequences of the Janus-faced character of attitudes and policies towards migrants that seek to penetrate “Fortress Europe”. Beginning with an examination of its founding ambitions, it locates the roots of an ingrained ambivalence in the legacies of the post-war period and the unresolved tension between the economicism of the European approach to labour migration and the philosophy of rights and solidarity embedded in the EU project. It highlights how the formalization of citizenship rights has produced both formal pathways towards inclusion for migrants and, in their selective eligibility criteria, exclusive systems of civic stratifica...
Sullivan, a newsroom hack, gets a tip off that gets his adrenalin racing. He can smell a story. He and his more steady colleague, Janice, begin investigating. It’s an astounding story, a scoop. Their editor, Porter, is not convinced until harrowing stories begin to emerge, and then even he has to admit something is seriously wrong. A young boy’s suicide takes the investigation into deeper water, but all is not going smoothly in the newsroom. Janice begins to outpace Sullivan, provoking his jealousy. When he sees his editor, taking Janice out on a date, it threatens not only the relationship, but the scoop. Sullivan is arrested and, in his attempt to clear his name, engages in phone hacking which uncovers even more fraudulent activity.
Bees, that have inhabited the Planet for over 100 million years, are the common thread that tells the story of various ecological challenges such as the reduction of biodiversity, climate change, soil degradation, and energy transition. Paradoxically, agriculture is one of the major causes of irreversible and, therefore, unsustainable changes such as global warming and the extinction of pollinators from which it derives its benefits and wealth. The massive use of fossil fuels, the distribution of poisons such as pesticides (persistent, toxic, and bioaccumulative), the loss of fertility in monocultures of plants selected to satisfy economic needs, are some of the main causes of an ecologically unsustainable food production system. The book tries to show a different vision of the World we are building, a story of backstories and underestimated dangers. This book received two prizes: "Steli di Pace" (Stems of Peace) by the Union of European Journalists and Communicators in 2023 and it was the winner of the "Concorso Nazionale per la divulgazione scientifica Kerit-LC Edizioni" (National Competition for science dissemination) in 2024.

This edited collection focuses on concepts of globalization, glocalization, transnationalism and cosmopolitanism. The contributions provide evidence of how in practice, global dynamics and individual lives are interrelated. It presents theoretical reflections on how the local, the transnational and global dimensions of social life are entwined and construct the meaning of one another, and offers everyday examples of how individuals and organizations try to answer global challenges in local contexts. The book closely focuses on migration processes, as one of the main phenomena allowing a high number of people from contemporary society to directly experience supranational dynamics, either as migrants or inhabitants of the places where migrants pass through or settle down. Globalization, Supranational Dynamics and Local Experiences will be of interest to students and scholars across a range of disciplines, including sociology, migration studies and global studies.
