Focus on Macular Degeneration Research

Focus on Macular Degeneration Research

Degeneration of the macula is the leading cause of legal blindness in people over fifty-five. The macula is used for most acute and detailed vision -- reading, driving, watching television, precise work, and recognising faces. However, this weakening of central vision does not necessarily affect colour and peripheral vision. Macular degeneration generally takes place over a gradual period and at different rates in each eye. Its causes are still unclear, but there exist two main types. 'Dry' degeneration occurs when the macular tissues of the retina thin and disturb pigmentation, and 'wet' includes bleeding and scar tissue. Though macular degeneration is usually age-related, there are forms that affect younger individuals, but the reasons behind those cases are not yet known. This new book provides state-of-the-art research results on this debilitating condition.

Current Cataract Surgical Techniques

The first clinical application of the phacoemulsification cataract surgical technique (often referred to as “phaco”) was introduced in 1967 by Dr. Charles Kelman. This innovation is a big step forward for cataract surgery. With the development of intraocular lens (IOL) design, more and more premium presbyopia- and astigmatism-correction IOLs are being used in clinics. This progress has greatly improved the visual quality of cataract patients. This book discusses the basic surgical skills required to perform this procedure, premium IOL surgical design, specific surgical plans for clinically challenging cases, and more. It provides readers with a comprehensive knowledge of the current state of the art of cataract surgery and surgical design.

Vitreo-retinal Surgery

Unlike the cornea or lens, the retina is part of the central nervous system and cannot be replaced. Therefore degeneration of the outer retina is blinding, but trials using devices such as retinal implants which combine biology with technology are showing promise at restoring vision. Macular diseases are the most common cause of blindness in the developed countries. Oedema of the macula may arise in the retina, such as in diabetes mellitus or in epiretinal membrane formation, but most importantly it is age-related insufficiency of the underlying retinal pigment epithelial cell that causes central scotoma. This volume on vitreoretinal surgery is written by authors who are leaders in these fiel...

Productivity Perspectives

Productivity Perspectives offers a timely and stimulating social science view on the productivity debate, drawing on the work of the ESRC funded Productivity Insights Network. The book examines the drivers and inhibitors of UK productivity growth in the light of international evidence, and the resulting dramatic slowdown and flatlining of productivity growth in the UK. The reasons for this so-called productivity puzzle are not well understood, and this book advances explanations and insights on these issues from different disciplinary and methodological perspectives. It will be of value to all those interested in, and engaging with, the challenge of slowing productivity growth.
