Reviews of the two-volume New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English, 2005: The king is dead. Long live the king! The old Partridge is not really dead; it remains the best record of British slang antedating 1945 Now, however, the preferred source for information about English slang of the past 60 years is the New Partridge. James Rettig, Booklist, American Library Association Most slang dictionaries are no better than momgrams or a rub of the brush, put together by shmegegges looking to make some moola. The New Partridge Dictionary of Slang and Unconventional English, on the other hand, is the wee babes. Ian Sansom, The Guardian The Concise New Partridge presents, for the f...

Fred's the Star

Fred is a young field mouse, and he's the only one in his family to survive the winter. It was the coldest winter the North Yorkshire Dales had ever known. As he sits nibbling away at a slightly browned apple core at the base of the dry stone wall he calls his home, Fred catches the sight of movement from the corner of his eye. He freezes at first, and then slowly turns to find a very large creature with a menacing snout and very long, menacing claws. Fred is relieved to learn that the creature is Bertram Kettlewell Smiley of Upper Wharfedale-Bertie, for short-and that he's not just a badger, but a badger of great repute. Fred is glad he's met Bertie and it's a good thing he has, for it isn't long before trouble threatens as they search for new homes. It's a move that becomes the first in a series of adventures that help them learn more about each other. And who knows, they may find other new friends, and even something more, in their adventures.

What Is My Purpose?

This book is for all parents: those who are pregnant, those who already are gifted with children and those future mothers and fathers just waiting for a special soul to make their life complete. For the latter, this book can be used daily for mediation and as a tool in asking for that special little person to choose us to be their parents. For those who have already been blessed with little ones, this book can be used as a valuable reminder for them as to who they are, where they are, and what their purpose in life is. We are so busy reacting to external situations in our ever-changing world that we often forget who we really are, smothering ourselves in a blanket of stress and anxiety over ...

Wise Words to Ponder

“When reading through Wise Words to Ponder, you will ponder at the depth of the philosophy, wisdom and humor Eric Wei has assembled. This is a truly enjoyable book.” --- Pacific Book Review “This collection offers wisdom stemming from many different lives, along with humor and courage gleaned from the best of the past. Overall, this book is a great gift of wisdom, compassion, and truth for the darkest of times. Recommended.” --- The US Review of Books A short saying can contain profound wisdom. A good quote often has a play of words and is short and crisp. More important, it should be inspirational and rich in wisdom and one which you can draw upon as you move on in life. If you like...

Breast Ghost

Breast Ghosts is a collection of ghost stories. Malaysian and Indonesian traditions and superstitions pertaining to ghosts are skilfully revealed to the reader as the narrator author relates personal experiences and second hand accounts. A fascinating aspect is that these are contemporary stories set in real places in Singapore and Indonesia. We visit both the Singaporean metropolis and the remote jungles of Java. This collection will be enjoyed by readers who like ghost stories, but also by those who are simply interested in the culture of Indonesia, Malaysia or Singapore. What is particularly engaging and unique about this collection is the strong feeling of authenticity owing to the first-person narration and the modern setting; even though the ghosts themselves come from centuries-old Indonesian folklore.
