Atmospheric Ammonia

Anthropogenic emissions of ammonia cause a host of environmental impacts, including loss of biodiversity, soil acidification and formation of particulate matter in the atmosphere. Under the auspices of the UNECE Convention on Long Range Transboundary Air Pollution, around 80 international experts met to review the state of scientific knowledge. This book reports their analysis. It concludes that threshold levels for ammonia effects have been underestimated and sets new values, it assesses the independent evidence to verify reported reductions in regional ammonia emissions, and it reviews the uncertainties in modelling ammonia, both in "hot spots" and at the regional scale.

This book is written for researchers and students interested in the function and role of chemical elements in biological or environmental systems. Experts have long known that the Periodic System of Elements (PSE) provides only an inadequate chemical description of elements of biological, environmental or medicinal importance. This book explores the notion of a Biological System of the Elements (BSE) established on accurate and precise multi-element data, including evolutionary aspects, representative sampling procedures, inter-element relationships, the physiological function of elements and uptake mechanisms. The book further explores the concept Stoichiometric Network Analysis (SNA) to analyze the biological roles of chemical species. Also discussed is the idea of ecotoxicological identity cards which give a first-hand description of properties relevant for biological and toxicological features of a certain chemical element and its geo biochemically plausible speciation form. The focus of this book goes beyond both classical bioinorganic chemistry and toxicology.

Monitoring with Lichens - Monitoring Lichens

A comprehensive, up-to-date review of lichens as biomonitors of air pollution (bioindication, metal and radionuclide accumulation, biomarkers), and as monitors of environmental change (including global climate change and biodiversity loss) in a wide array of terrestrial habitats. Several methods for using lichens as biomonitors are described in a special section of the book.

Citizens of Worlds

An unparalleled how-to guide to citizen-sensing practices that monitor air pollution Modern environments are awash with pollutants churning through the air, from toxic gases and intensifying carbon to carcinogenic particles and novel viruses. The effects on our bodies and our planet are perilous. Citizens of Worlds is the first thorough study of the increasingly widespread use of digital technologies to monitor and respond to air pollution. It presents practice-based research on working with communities and making sensor toolkits to detect pollution while examining the political subjects, relations, and worlds these technologies generate. Drawing on data from the Citizen Sense research group...

Spirits in the Bush

  • Categories: Art

Spirits in the Bush surveys the art of Gippsland, from the colonial to the contemporary. This expansive, original and illuminating compendium leads readers on a journey through artistic and provincial history, interweaving the lives of residents and visitors. Collectively, it presents a vivid account of the influence of place on the cultural imagination. A fascinating cast of characters includes some of Australia’s best-known and most-loved artists, including Eugène von Guérard, Jessie Traill, Arthur Streeton, Clarice Beckett, Sidney Nolan, Arthur Boyd, Fred Williams, and Jeffrey Smart. Readers will discover also a host of new names destined for recognition. Spirits in the Bush reveals how artists have grappled with a region that is in equal measures beautiful and brutal, and which has provided the stage for many of the key battles in Australian art history. Bound by geographical camaraderie, and with the spectre of Gippsland’s past as an unwavering presence, the stories of their art unfold in a unique dialogue. This publication was made possible through the generous support of the Gordon Darling Foundation.

Debrett's Peerage & Baronetage 2008

The extraordinary life of Australia's first international racehorse, from creating new records in Australia to his life in California, where he won the Hollywood Gold Cup In wartime Sydney, a small and weedy racehorse kicked his way through the top tier of Australian racing. He was Shannon, one of the fastest horses the nation had ever seen. Between 1943 and 1947, Shannon broke record after record with his garrulous jockey Darby Munro. When they sensationally lost the Epsom Handicap by six inches, they forever were stamped by the race they didn't win. Sold in August 1947 for the highest price ever paid at auction for an Australian thoroughbred, Shannon ended up in America. Through headline-s...
