NEW STATESMAN AND OBSERVER BOOKS OF THE YEAR 2017 'Destined to be a classic . . . this year's must-read memoir' Mary Karr, author of The Liars' Club 'Irrepressible . . . joyous, funny and filthy . . . Lockwood blows the roof off every paragraph' Joe Dunthorne, author of Submarine The childhood of Patricia Lockwood, the poet dubbed' The Smutty-Metaphor Queen of Lawrence, Kansas' by The New York Times, was unusual in many respects. There was the location: an impoverished, nuclear waste-riddled area of the American Midwest. There was her mother, a woman who speaks almost entirely in strange riddles and warnings of impending danger. Above all, there was her gun-toting, guitar-riffing, frequently...

Review of VA Central Incident Response Capability Contract Planning, Award, and Administration

Evaluates the planning, award, & admin. of the Central Incident Response Capability (CIRC) contract of the The Dept. of Vet. Affairs (VA). This audit determined whether the contract was properly planned & awarded; administered effectively; & reasonably priced. The contract was to provide state-of-the-practice incident handling & response capabilities for the entire VA. VA had to expand the existing CIRC to a broader, world-class operational environment to assure confidentiality, integrity, availability, & privacy of information & services for Veterans. The report identified weaknesses in the planning, award, & admin. of the contract that ultimately resulted in the demise of the contract for lack of funding after less than three years. Tables.

Prophetic Poetry

I went to a Salvation Army dinner with some of the staff of our church and came out knowing something had happened to me spiritually! The next morning, in my devotions, singing In My Life Lord Be Glorified, I heard, I am glorified. It was the beginning of my poetry. In the first poem He gave me, I realized He had birthed in my heart a ministry of missions. My mission field is wherever the Lord places me. I love sharing Jesus with everyone, but my special love is young people. Ive been blessed to spend much time with the Lord, sitting at His feet, in worship and praise, which what much of this poetry is about. Many are about sharing Jesus with the lost and the importance of salvation. They sh...

It's about what happens when real life collides with the increasing absurdity of a world accessed through a screen. It's about living in world that contains both an abundance of proof that there is goodness, empathy, and justice in the universe, and a deluge of evidence to the contrary. It's a meditation on love, language and human connection from one of the most original voices of our time. ______________________________________________ 'An utterly distinctive mixture of depth, dazzling linguistic richness, anarchic wit and raw emotional candour' Rowan Williams A 2021 Book of the Year: Sunday Times, Guardian, Daily Mail, Telegraph, Evening Standard, The Times, New Statesman, Red, Observer, Independent, Daily Telegraph

The first edition of A Contemporary Introduction to Sociology was the first truly new introductory sociology textbook in decades. Written by two leading sociologists at the cutting edge of theory and research, the text reflected the idioms and interests of contemporary American life and global social issues. The second edition continues to invite students to reflect upon their lives within the context of the combustible leap from modern to postmodern life. The authors show how culture is central to understanding many world problems as they challenge readers to confront the risks and potentialities of a postmodern era in which the futures of both the physical and social environment seem uncertain. As culture rapidly changes in the 21st century, the authors have broadened their analysis to cover developments in social media and new data on gender and transgender issues.

Elections: Status of GAO's Review of Voting Equipment Used in Florida's 13th Congressional District

In Nov. 2006, about 18,000 under-votes were reported in Sarasota County (SC) in the race for Florida¿s 13th Cong. Dist. Assistance was sought to determine whether the voting systems contributed to the large under-vote in SC. This review discusses: What voting systems & equip. were used in SC & what processes governed their use?; What was the scope of the under-vote in SC in the gen. election?; To what extent were tests conducted on the voting systems in SC prior to the gen. election & what were the results of those tests?; & Considering the tests that were conducted on the voting systems from SC after the gen. election, are additional tests needed to determine whether the voting systems contributed to the under-vote?
