Peace from Broken Pieces

How do you find your way through the broken pieces and the pain to peace? In this honest and searching book, New York Times best-selling author Iyanla Vanzant recounts the last decade of her profoundly human journey and shares her own hard lessons to inspire you to put your personal puzzle back together. Part metaphorical teaching story, part wrenching personal chronicle, this phoenix-rising-from-the-ashes tale is about men and money, love and work, mothers and daughters, life and death, and the patterns and pathologies that families pass down through the generations—until someone gets clear enough to break the pattern and pave the way to healing. Discover why everything you need to learn is reflected in your relationships; gain a new perspective on personal power, spiritual purpose, and karma; and recognize that it is possible to make your broken pieces whole.

Everyone's History

The book’s structure blends history and geography. A good world atlas or a world historical atlas will be helpful in the reading. The historical arrangement of contents has six Parts” Classical, Mediaeval, Early Modern (Lands), Early Modern (Ideas), Late Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries, Twentieth Century. Although this sequence of periods and categories fits Western/European history best, it is also reasonably appropriate for Central Asia, India, and China. For other regions it is more arbitrary, and Classical and Mediaeval periods are merged. Because the Parts overlap and involve imprecise categories, in the List of Contents and Summaries no attempt is made to give dates for their beginning and end.

Modelling Extremal Events

"A reader's first impression on leafing through this book is of the large number of graphs and diagrams, used to illustrate shapes of distributions...and to show real data examples in various ways. A closer reading reveals a nice mix of theory and applications, with the copious graphical illustrations alluded to. Such a mixture is of course dear to the heart of the applied probabilist/statistician, and should impress even the most ardent theorists." --MATHEMATICAL REVIEWS

An Evaluation of Findings from Cleveland's State-Funded Voucher Program

This study examines the results of multiple evaluations of the Cleveland Scholarship and Tutoring Grant Program (CTSP), a state-funded voucher program, by exploring extant evaluations and literature. Attention will be given to the following research question: Does participation in the Cleveland Scholarship and Tutoring Grant Program have the hypothesized positive effect on traditional public school students' academic achievement? Cleveland's voucher program provides an ideal contextualized setting for ascertaining the extent to which school choice programs afford poor families the same educational options available to affluent families. This study concludes that overall there are no statistically significant gains in voucher students' academic achievement. In fact, it appears that some voucher students performed slightly worse in math. The program does, however, afford low-income students the opportunity to attend private secular or religious schools in accordance with the program's initial design and intent.

Global Economic Turmoil And The Public Good

The global financial crisis of 2008 was resolved over the course of two years after the collapse of the US housing bubble, but the world economy did not vigorously rebound as expected. The West has been torpid, while Asian economic vitality has steadily waned. These developments have been diversely interpreted and authorities have responded with a series of institutional reforms and policy fixes, without coming to grips with accumulating national debts, the kinds of speculative practices that caused the financial crisis, and the inadequacies of neoclassical and Keynesian macroeconomic explanations.Global Economic Turmoil and the Public Good presents the cumulative research of both authors. It updates the readers on global economic developments since 2008, while providing a concise, yet comprehensive survey of the causes and protracted consequences of the 2008 financial crisis. The book explains the global financial disequilibrium and catastrophic crisis risks; surveys and appraises institutional reforms designed to reinvigorate growth and ameliorate financial crisis risk; and proposes specific actions which will prevent another global financial crisis and its economic fallout.
