This book brings together 10 experiments which introduce historical perspectives into mathematics classrooms for 11 to 18-year-olds. The authors suggest that students should not only read ancient texts, but also should construct, draw and manipulate. The different chapters refer to ancient Greek, Indian, Chinese and Arabic mathematics as well as to contemporary mathematics. Students are introduced to well-known mathematicians—such as Gottfried Leibniz and Leonard Euler—as well as to less famous practitioners and engineers. Always, there is the attempt to associate the experiments with their scientific and cultural contexts. One of the main values of history is to show that the notions and concepts we teach were invented to solve problems. The different chapters of this collection all have, as their starting points, historic problems—mathematical or not. These are problems of exchanging and sharing, of dividing figures and volumes as well as engineers’ problems, calculations, equations and congruence. The mathematical reasoning which accompanies these actions is illustrated by the use of drawings, folding, graphical constructions and the production of machines.

An illuminating study of the marriages and family lives of Diderot, Lavoisier, and other geniuses of the Age of Reason. We may imagine the lone scientific or philosophical genius generating insights in isolation—but in reality, the families of scientists and philosophers during the Enlightenment played a substantial role, not only making space for inquiry within the home but also assisting in observing, translating, calculating, and illustrating. Sentimental Savants is the first book to explore the place of the family among the savants of the French Enlightenment, a group that openly embraced their families and domestic lives, even going so far as to test out their ideas, from education to...
DIVArmed with a powerful laser, a terrorist group threatens the US—and one government agent must race to recover the weapon before it’s too late/divDIV Air France Flight 447 is high above the Atlantic, making its way through a patch of turbulence, when its instruments begin to fail. Pilot and crew fight to regain control as the plane plummets from the sky, but death comes before they even hit the water. When investigators pick through the wrecked aircraft and desiccated bodies, they can reach only one conclusion: Flight 447 disintegrated in mid-air./divDIV The cause was a laser, the likes of which the world has never known. Based on the mad dreams of Nikola Tesla, the weapon’s destructive powers are immeasurable, and it has fallen into the hands of Al Qaeda—or its allies. It’s up to Jason Peters—a highly trained government operative who was beginning to get bored with his retirement—to recover the laser to safety. Ending this threat will force him to shed quite a bit of terrorist blood, but Peters has never minded getting dirty for the sake of Uncle Sam./div
