The women of Ancient Rome, were obliged to maintain the 'Mos maiorum', the established order of things. Romulus himself was believed to have devised the almost indissoluble marriage rite, the 'Confarreatio', which put a wife under the absolute power of her husband. She could not divorce him, but he could divorce her.
The Cippus of the Forum is reviewed in a new light thanks to the results of laser scanning commissioned by the Soprintendenza di Roma. A synergistic approach to the inscription, with the use of autopsies of the original and reproductions and digital image analysis, has made it possible to discard some old hypotheses and suggest new heuristic paths. An Appendix on Latin inscriptions from the seventh and sixth centuries BCE completes the work.
This book argues that Republican Rome and its component buildings were inextricably intertwined with government, which they perpetuated and challenged.
Emphasizing on the one hand the reconstruction of the material culture of specific residences, and on the other, the way in which particular domestic objects reflect, shape, and mediate family values and relationships within the home, this volume offers a distinct contribution to research on the early modern Italian domestic interior. Though the essays mainly take an art historical approach, the book is interdisciplinary in that it considers the social implications of domestic objects for family members of different genders, age, and rank, as well as for visitors to the home. By adopting a broad chronological framework that encompasses both Renaissance and Baroque Italy, and by expanding the regional scope beyond Florence and Venice to include domestic interiors from less studied centers such as Urbino, Ferrara, and Bologna, this collection offers genuinely new perspectives on the home in early modern Italy.
The first edition was extremely well received, providing an introduction and insight to this important topic in a comprehensive yet easy to read form. It was chosen to be issued to the representatives of the organizations from the G8 and G20 countries attending the University Summit held in Turin in 2009 which addressed the issue of how education and research can assist sustainable development. The second edition, completely updated to reflect the significant advances and new insights that have been made since publication of the first edition, focuses on two main issues: Facilitating a dialogue between all stakeholders so that the complexity of the problem can be exposed, structured and comm...
Sustainable development has been characterised by an emphasis onenvironmental issues and an ad hoc approach to structuring thesubject which hinders the development of knowledge in a systematicway. The built environment contributes significantly to theenvironment but is also one of the major factors in determiningwhether a community is sustainable in the longer term. A structure is required which aids definition, provides a commonset of values, establishes measurement methods to define progress, and suggests a management system and decision protocol whichenables practitioners to engage and use the resultant structuresand information. This book provides a suggested structure in which all aspects ofsustainable development can be included together with a set ofevaluation techniques which can be used within the structure toprovide assistance to decision making.
This survey and synthesis of the structural and decorative uses of Roman remains, particularly marble, throughout the mediaeval Mediterranean, deals with the Christian West - but also Byzantium and Islam, each the inheritor of much Roman territory. It includes a 5000-image DVD.
Shopping was as important in the Renaissance as it is in the 21st century. This book breaks new ground in the area of Renaissance material culture, focussing on the marketplace in its various aspects, ranging from middle-class to courtly consumption and from the provision of foodstuffs to the acquisition of antiquities and holy relics. It asks how men and women of different social classes went out into the streets, squares and shops to buy the goods they needed and wanted on a daily or on a once-in-a-lifetime basis during the Renaissance period. Drawing on a detailed mixture of archival, literary and visual sources, she exposes the fears, anxieties and social possibilities of the Renaissance...
