The collection of poems in Patricia Blanco's literary debut come at the reader like an exposed nerve. Her words and turns of phrase layer upon the page, transporting us through her full-throated collage of revelations, heartache and love. This is the kind of book better ingested than merely read, a naked, rigorous desire for awakening through truth. Pluto takes a breathtaking swipe at purging and unburdening, weaving lines through a journey of imagery that often tends to abstraction without losing its emotional impact.

The Speciation of Modern Homo Sapiens

This is the first volume to address directly the question of the speciation of modern Homo sapiens. The subject raises profound questions about the nature of the species, our defining characteristic (it is suggested it is language), and the brain changes and their genetic basis that make us distinct. The British Academy and the Academy of Medical Sciences have brought together experts from palaeontology, archaeology, linguistics, psychology, genetics and evolutionary theory to present evidence and theories at the cutting edge of our understanding of these issues. Palaeontological and genetic work suggests that the transition from a precursor hominid species to modern man took place between 1...

Vision is a gift most of us take for granted. New parents have so many responsibilities and often are inundated with the dos and don'ts of parenting, so understandably eye checkups can fall to the back of the "to-do" list. This journey will leave you with an indelible impression - your child's vision is not a guarantee. This thought provoking account will "open your eyes" to the importance of making your child's eye health a top priority, and will give you the tools to do so.

Landscapes of the New West

In the early 1970s, empowered by the civil rights and women's movements, a new group of women writers began speaking to the American public. Their topic, broadly defined, was the postmodern American West. By the mid-1980s, their combined works made for a bona fide literary groundswell in both critical and commercial terms. However, as Krista Comer notes, despite the attentions of publishers, the media, and millions of readers, literary scholars have rarely addressed this movement or its writers. Too many critics, Comer argues, still enamored of western images that are both masculine and antimodern, have been slow to reckon with the emergence of a new, far more "feminine," postmodern, multira...

Communicating Physics

The textbooks written by Adolphe Ganot (1804-1887) played a major role in shaping the way physics was taught in the nineteenth century. Ganot's books were translated from their original French into more than ten languages, including English, allowing their adoption as standard works in Britain and spreading their influence as far as North America, Australia, India and Japan. Simon's Franco-British case study looks at the role of Ganot's two textbooks: Traite elementaire de physique experimentale et appliquee (1851) and Cours de physique purement experimentale (1859), and their translations into English by Edmund Atkinson. The study is novel for its international comparison of nineteenth-century physics, its acknowledgement of the role of book production on the impact of the titles, and for its emphasis on the role of communication in the making of science.
