CSR is a fragile concept if conceived only at the organizational level or driven only by leadership will. Many writers deal with aspects of social responsibility, but most deal with it as this kind of organizational and voluntary initiative. Few address the wider policy agenda. The contributors to Territories of Social Responsibility - researchers and practitioners from four continents - all participated in an international workshop co-ordinated by Patricia Almeida Ashley as part of her role as Chair in Development and Equity at the International Institute of Social Studies. They form a policy network contributing to studies on the concept of a multi-actor, multilevel and territorial approac...

Language is one of the greatest predictors of personal, social, academic, and professional success. No one is born a reader; instead, learning to read is a process that requires time, effort, and availability. The only way for reading comprehension to develop is through practice: one learns to read by reading. As such, it is integral to acknowledge the importance of knowing how to read and facilitating this skill in schools and at home. Reading is a cornerstone for learning and no child will know academic success if their reading ability is compromised. Modern Reading Practices and Collaboration Between Schools, Family, and Community is a premier reference book that consolidates knowledge on...

Emerging technologies in education are dramatically reshaping the way we teach, learn, and create meaning—both formally and informally. The use of emerging technologies within educational contexts requires new methodological approaches to teaching, learning, and educational research. This leads educational technology developers, researchers, and practitioners to engage in the creation of diverse digital learning tools that can be used in a wide range of learning situations and scenarios. A quarter of a century ago His Royal Highness Prince Claus of the Netherlands (1926-2002) formulated his statements on ‘development and equity’. To honour him and his work, a professorial chair in ‘development and equity’ was established in 2003: the ‘Prince Claus Chair’. On the occasion of the tenth anniversary of the Chair, a conference was held in The Hague in November 2012. Each of the ten chair holders presented a paper written from his/her own perspective. These papers have been brought together in this book and show the diversity and richness of the theme. The volume also includes three essays by the promising young scholars who were judged to be the top three in a competition for the best Master’s thesis in ‘development, equity and citizenship’.
