Plató va representar el trànsit de l’ànima del món sensible al de les Idees immutables i eternes amb la imatge d’una caverna, on, segons explica a la República, hi ha empresonats uns homes que només veuen ombres de la Realitat ideal i lluminosa de l’exterior. A aquesta dimensió superior és possible ascendir-hi quan, amb la pràctica de la filosofia, s’aconsegueix deixar enrere el llast de la matèria. Seduïts per aquesta imatge, molts artistes i escriptors l’han adaptat al llarg del temps a sensibilitats diverses, fins al punt de crear una autèntica tradició. El present volum fa un recorregut per obres d’autors contemporanis que tracten sobre aquest tema —des de Josep Palau i Fabre i Rodolf Sirera fins a José Saramago, Oscar Wilde, Alberto Moravia, Luis Cernuda i Eugene O’Neill, entre altres— i mostra com en el cinema, l’art de les imatges en moviment, es poden establir paral·lelismes clars i molt suggeridors amb la cèlebre caverna platònica.
Teaching Medieval and Early Modern Cross-Cultural Encounters

Filming Forster
Filming Forster focuses upon the challenges of producing film adaptations of five of E. M. Forster's novels. Rather than follow the older comparative approach, which typically damned the film for not being "faithful" to the novel, this project explores the interactive relationship between film and novel. That relationship is implicit in the title "Filming" Forster, rather than "Forster Filmed," which would suggest a completed process. A film adaptation forever changes the novel from which it was adapted, just as a return to the novel changes the viewer's perceptions of the film. Adapting Forster's novels for the screen was postponed until well after the author's death in 1970 because the trustees of the author's estate fulfilled his wish that his work not be filmed. Following the appearance of David Lean's film A Passage to India in 1984, four other film adaptations were released within seven years. Perhaps the most important was the Merchant Ivory production of Maurice, based upon Forster's "gay" novel, published a year after his death. That film was among the first to approach same-sex relationships between men in a serious, respectful, and generally optimistic manner.
Dark Matter
Dark Matter maps the invisible dimension of theater whose effects are felt everywhere in performance. Examining phenomena such as hallucination, offstage character, offstage action, sexuality, masking, technology, and trauma, Andrew Sofer engagingly illuminates the invisible in different periods of postclassical western theater and drama. He reveals how the invisible continually structures and focuses an audience’s theatrical experience, whether it’s black magic in Doctor Faustus, offstage sex in A Midsummer Night’s Dream, masked women in The Rover, self-consuming bodies in Suddenly Last Summer, or surveillance technology in The Archbishop’s Ceiling. Each discussion pinpoints new and striking facets of drama and performance that escape sight. Taken together, Sofer’s lively case studies illuminate how dark matter is woven into the very fabric of theatrical representation. Written in an accessible style and grounded in theater studies but interdisciplinary by design, Dark Matter will appeal to theater and performance scholars, literary critics, students, and theater practitioners, particularly playwrights and directors.
Oscar Wilde's Aesthetic Education
This book focuses on the role that the Oxford classical curriculum has had in shaping Oscar Wilde’s aestheticism. It positions Wilde as a classically trained intellectual and outlines the path he took to gain recognition as a writer and promoter of the aesthetic movement. This narrative is conveyed through a broad range of literary sources, including Wilde’s travel poetry, American lectures, and canonical works like ‘The Critic as Artist’, The Soul of Man, The Picture of Dorian Gray and De Profundis. This study proposes that Wilde approached aestheticism as a personalised, self-directed learning experience – a mode of self-culture – which could be used to maintain an intellectual life outside of the university. It also explores Wilde’s thoughts on education and considers the significance of male friendship at Oxford, and in Wilde’s life and literature.
Vessant seriós i tràgic de Woody Allen, El
Què representa per a Woody Allen la tragèdia grega? Sobretot, un model ètic que encara és vigent, perquè els éssers humans, confosos i perduts en una existència el sentit de la qual no arriben a copsar, i moguts per passions que no saben dominar, estan condemnats a cometre errors sovint tràgics, però al mateix temps mostren la força vital necessària per redreçar-se i assumir la seva responsabilitat. Hi ha sis pel·lícules en què els protagonistes atenyen aquesta dimensió tràgica, negativa i positiva alhora: Delictes i faltes, Poderosa Afrodita, Melinda i Melinda, Match Point, El somni de Cassandra i Wonder Wheel. A partir de l’anàlisi d’aquests films, El vessant seriós i tràgic de Woody Allen posa en evidència el paper nuclear i vertebrador que tenen la tragèdia i bona part de la filosofia grega en el pensament del cineasta nord-americà, i ofereix una reflexió d’abast universal sobre la vida humana i els seus enigmes.
Turning Points
At times of crisis and revolution such as ours, diagnoses of crucial junctures and ruptures – ‘turning points’ – in the continuous flow of history are more prevalent than ever. Analysing literary, cinematic and other narratives, the volume seeks to understand the meanings conveyed by different concepts of turning points, the alternative concepts to which they are opposed when used to explain historical change, and those contexts in which they are unmasked as false and over-simplifying constructions. Literature and film in particular stress the importance of turning points as a sensemaking device (as part of a character’s or a community’s cultural memory), while at the same time unfolding the constructive and hence relative character of turning points. Offering complex reflections on the notion of turning points, literary and filmic narratives are thus of particular interest to the present volume.
