Pen-and-ink drawings, photographs, slides, and negatives of Mexican colonial hacienda buildings. The images document architectural forms and details of approximately 300 haciendas, many of which no longer exist. Included are depictions of residences, chapels, furniture, statuary, and other features of the haciendas; also portrayed are things representative of hacienda operations, such as machinery, farm implements, barns, and other structures and objects. The following states (and haciendas) are covered extensively in the collection: Campeche (Castamay), Guanajuato (Puerto de Nieto), Hidalgo, Jalisco, Oaxaca (Blanca, San Felipe, Tenache), Puebla, Yucatán. Photographs and slides were made after 1941 during Bartlett's extensive travels in Mexico. An exception is a group of 13 photographs, given to Bartlett in 1954 by Ricardo Lancaster-Jones, depicting the haciendas El Cortijo (Colima) and Santa Cruz (Jalisco) from 1880 to 1940. The collection includes negatives for fewer than one-third of the photographs. Drawings were completed by 1973.

Bartlett (When the owl cried) devoted more than 40 years to visiting haciendas throughout Mexico by horseback, foot, canoe, and auto. For the majority of estates visited, this record is the only surviving testimony to their architectural, economic, and general historical importance. Neither the photos nor the drawings are of great artistic merit. The text gives a good notion of the importance of these estates. No index. Annotation copyrighted by Book News, Inc., Portland, OR

The novel was born religious, alongside Protestant texts produced in the same format by the same publishers. Novels borrowed features of these texts but over the years distinguished themselves, becoming the genre we know today. Jordan Alexander Stein traces this history, showing how the physical object of the book shaped the stories it contained.

This book explores the nature of meaning, primarily through readings of the work of Walter Benjamin and Ludwig Wittgenstein. Alexander Stern offers a critical analysis of Benjamin's philosophy of language, finding in it a common root with Wittgenstein's thought on language, and traces the historical foundation of both accounts of meaning to eighteenth- and nineteenth-century German philosophy. Benjamin's theory of language is notoriously dense and obscure. In elucidating it, Stern emphasizes Benjamin's attempt to reorient the Kantian project around language-the medium in which knowledge is expressed-and his concern with the logical understanding of language gaining credence in the work of Be...

Sasha and Emma

In 1889 two Russian immigrants, Emma Goldman and Alexander Berkman, met in a coffee shop on the Lower East Side. Over the next fifty years Emma and Sasha would be fast friends, fleeting lovers, and loyal comrades. This dual biography offers an unprecedented glimpse into their intertwined lives, the lasting influence of the anarchist movement they shaped, and their unyielding commitment to equality and justice. Berkman shocked the country in 1892 with "the first terrorist act in America," the failed assassination of the industrialist Henry Clay Frick for his crimes against workers. Passionate and pitiless, gloomy yet gentle, Berkman remained Goldman's closest confidant though the two were oft...
