The Nordic Model of Welfare
In international welfare state scholarship and political discourse the Nordic Model has become a standard concept. But how precise is the concept and to what extent do the five Nordic countries fit into this overall pattern? In this book a group of Nordic historians trace the historical origins and developments of welfare in the five Nordic countries. The aim of this book is to modify the standard concept by emphasizing both the common features and the variations between them. As a work hypothesis the authors regard "Norden" as a model with five exceptions. The articles in this book are all written by historians who have worked within the framework of a Nordic research project operating under the title The Nordic Welfare-Model - a Historical reappraisal.
Nordic Cooperation
The recent crises in global economy and in European integration have caused a considerable revival of interest in the Nordic Welfare Model. However, less attention has been given to the ways in which the nations that form Scandinavia or ‘Norden’ are connected through various forms of inter- and transnational cooperation. With contributions from a team of experts in the field, this volume analyses Nordic cooperation in a European perspective and argues that this special form of transnational cooperation has been crucial in the development of the Nordic Welfare Model. In addition, it also contends that the Nordic model of transnational cooperation is a relevant case study when pondering the present problems of European integration. Beyond Welfare State Models
Welfare state models have for decades been the gold standard of welfare state research. Rhetorics of Nordic Democracy
Democracy is today a concept that is overwhelmingly positively evaluated almost everywhere. A lot has been written about socio-economic and cultural backgrounds of democratic regimes as well as their institutional settings. By contrast, not much is known about the political manoeuvres and speech acts by which 'democracy' has been tied to particular regions and cultures in concrete historical situations. This book discusses a series of efforts to rhetorically produce a particular Nordic version of democracy. It shows that the rhetorical figure 'Nordic democracy' was a product of the age of totalitarianism and the Cold War. It explores the ways in which 'Nordic democracy' was used, mainly by the social democrats, to provide the welfare politics with cultural and historical legitimacy and foundations. Thus, it also acknowledges the ideological and geopolitical context in which the 'Nordic welfare state' was conceptualised and canonised. The contributors of the book are specialists on Nordic politics and history, who share a particular interest in political rhetoric and conceptual history.

The Knowledge Triangle Programme
The Knowledge Triangle programme was initiated by the Nordic Council of Ministers in 2011 with the aim to study and promote knowledge transfer between innovation actors in academia, industry and public sectors of the Nordic countries. Networks of relevant actors were established in key thematic areas to facilitate a systematic and sustainable model of cooperation with the long-term ambition to stimulate economic growth in the Nordic countries. In 2012, the programme was extended to include both Nordic and Chinese innovation actors. This publication is a collective work of partners of the Knowledge Triangle programme and provides an overview of the Nordic and Sino-Nordic networks. The publication acts as a report of the programme and as a guide for academia, research institutions and businesses to discover new models to build a strong knowledge base and accelerate innovation processes.
