The Long Man

Much has been written about World War Two and the events leading up to its onset in September, 1939, but the characters featured in The Long Man are so diversified they offer five entirely different aspects of similar events during that time. As well, an intriguing tale is interwoven with historic fact. The fear of detection is a constant companion to Janine Parke, an experienced agent and civilian pilot working for British Intelligence. She is torn between her loyalty to England and her native France when Nazi occupation threatens both countries. Of her clandestine operations, she can tell no one. Claude Simone, a Parisian Jew, has partnered Janine for some years, and poses as an Englishman...

One of Tallahassee's richest cultural entities, the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at FSU, has collected here an anthology of mostly true and some fictional stories and poems, all rich, warm and seasoned. You get tales: bird dogs sprayed yellow and sulfurous; a white girl walking dusty red clay Georgia back roads and meeting her first black woman alone; an offbeat mom zanier than Lucille Ball; a magical memory with hooting owls echoing across a Suwannee River of the past; the chilling monologue of an old man set on his last revenge. In a poem, the narrator talks about finding an old friend on line with whom she tests recipes for rescue and disaster. What's not to love about a renaissance of words from a generation which has navigated its way through one world war, the cheery 50s, change-happy 60s, groovy 70s, greedy 80s, rich 90s, and into the next century? They have plenty to show us here. Mary Jane Ryals Poet Laureate of the Big Bend Tallahassee, Florida

In 1929, Hollywood mogul William Fox (1879-1952) came close to controlling the entire motion picture industry. His Fox Film Corporation had grown from a $1600 investment into a globe-spanning $300 million empire; he also held patents to the new sound-on-film process. Forced into a series of bitter power struggles, Fox was ultimately toppled from his throne, and the studio bearing his name would merge in 1935 with Darryl F. Zanuck's flourishing 20th Century Pictures. The 25-year lifespan of the Fox Film Corporation, home of such personalities as Theda Bara, Tom Mix, Janet Gaynor and John Ford, is chronicled in this thorough illustrated history. Included are never-before-published financial figures revealing costs and grosses of Fox's biggest successes and failures, and a detailed filmogaphy of the studio's 1100-plus releases, among them What Price Glory?, Seventh Heaven and the Oscar-winning Cavalcade.

West Medford, Massachusetts has been home to a thriving African American community, where families have lived for generations since the end of the Civil War. The stories of its residents have been fading as elders die and families move away. Most of the history of this neighborhood resides within the memories of these few remaining elders. The discovery of over one hundred funeral programs, saved and collected by residents since the mid-twentieth century, tell the stories of residents who have passed on but made countless contributions to the community. These funeral programs, along with supplemental interviews, illustrate how past residents developed community resources and used ingenuity to help create a strong neighborhood of their own. Within these pages are stories of personal perseverance and tenacity, humor and resiliency. Through portraits of individuals, West Medfords African-American neighborhood of the past is documented, through the sharing of the lives of men and women, and how they interfaced to create a solid community, despite societal and economic obstacles.
