Jovem militante de esquerda, Paulo Emílio Sales Gomes foi preso na repressão que se seguiu à tentativa de tomada do poder pelos comunistas em 1935. Fugiu da cadeia e exilou-se em Paris, onde foi apresentado ao cinema. Lá acompanhou os processos de Moscou, o que o levou a abandonar o Partido Comunista para construir um pensamento de esquerda independente no Brasil. Frustrado com o processo de democratização, deixou a política partidária para mergulhar de corpo inteiro na crítica e no ensino de cinema.
