(...) A filosofia se define, para Deleuze, como criação conceitual, e todo o seu trabalho é marcado por uma extraordinária invenção de conceitos. A arte é, com efeito, do domínio por excelência da criação, mas a arte cria blocos de sensações e não conceitos filosóficos. Grandes artistas e escritores são também grandes pensadores, mas pensam em termos de perceptos e afectos. Pintores pensam com linhas e cores, músicos pensam com sons, cineastas, com imagens e escritores, com palavras. Por isso, não há nenhum privilégio ou hierarquia entre essas diferentes atividades, pois cada uma delas é igualmente criadora. O verdadeiro objeto da arte é criar seres de sensação, agregados sensíveis; o objeto da filosofia é a criação conceitual. Criar um conceito é tão difícil quanto realizar uma composição visual, sonora ou verbal. 'ReCapricorning' the Atlantic
This special issue of Luso-Brazilian Review includes articles on the Lusophone South Atlantic by historians of Africa and Brazil originally presented in May of 2006 at the Michigan State University and University of Michigan’s Atlantic History Workshop “ReCapricorning the Atlantic: Luso-Brazilian and Luso-African Perspectives on the Atlantic World.” Workshop participants set out to “ReCapricorn the Atlantic” by assessing how new research on the Lusophone South Atlantic modifies, challenges, or confirms major trends and paradigms in the expanding scholarship on Atlantic History.
The Atlantic Forest
The Atlantic Forest is one of the 36 hotspots for biodiversity conservation worldwide. It is a unique, large biome (more than 3000 km in latitude; 2500 in longitude), marked by high biodiversity, high degree of endemic species and, at the same time, extremely threatened. Approximately 70% of the Brazilian population lives in the area of this biome, which makes the conflict between biodiversity conservation and the sustainability of the human population a relevant issue. This book aims to cover: 1) the historical characterization and geographic variation of the biome; 2) the distribution of the diversity of some relevant taxa; 3) the main threats to biodiversity, and 4) possible opportunities to ensure the biodiversity conservation, and the economic and social sustainability. Also, it is hoped that this book can be useful for those involved in the development of public policies aimed at the conservation of this important global biome.
