The Enlightenment of peasants, an 18th-century phenomenon that originated from an interest in common people and ideas of about the emancipation of the lower classes, had a crucial impact on creating Latvian secular literary culture. When Baltic German intellectuals, inspired by the Popular Enlightenment in German-speaking countries, undertook the task to educate Latvian peasants through books, they also laid the foundation for the future emancipation of Latvian culture. By exploring the nature of book production and changing images of peasants in Livonia and Courland in the second part of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th century, this book offers insights into the complex historical relationship between Latvians and Baltic Germans and the regional specifics of the Baltic Enlightenment.

This is the first volume on the studies of queer identities in Europe to adopt a strong focus on the history of the Baltic region among other countries in Central and East Europe. The literarisation of the early modern Baltic Sea region was a long and complex process with varying trajectories for different vernacular languages. This volume highlights the interaction of local social and cultural settings with wider political and confessional contexts. Die Aufklärung als Epoche und Denkbewegung ist eng an einen neuen Gebrauch der Medien gebunden. Erwerb, Vermittlung und Vertrieb von Wissen mögen zunächst nur das Privileg weniger gelehrter Köpfe gewesen sein, im Kern intendierte die Aufklärung jedoch eine Öffnung der respublica litteraria für alle Menschen. Diese Ausformung der Medien fand nicht nur in den Zentren der Aufklärung statt, sondern auch in deren Peripherien, wie etwa dem Baltikum. Auch dort entstanden und etablierten sich Medien der Aufklärung. Welches waren die wirkmächtigsten Medienpraktiken? Wer waren die wichtigsten Träger und an wen richtete sich die Aufklärung in Estland, Livland und Kurland? Welche Funktionen hatten die unterschiedlichen Sprachen? Das Buch stellt das Baltikum als eine exemplarische europäische Aufklärungsregion vor und zeigt durch verschiedene disziplinäre Zugriffe (Germanistik, Geschichte, Komparatistik, Kunstgeschichte, Theologie) die Wirksamkeit aufklärerischer Medienformate in dieser Region.
Die literarische Kultur des 17. bis 19. Jahrhunderts war auf dem Gebiet der heutigen Republiken Estland und Lettland durch Auseinandersetzungen um Konfession, Stand und Nation geprägt und artikulierte sich zunächst weitgehend auf Deutsch, dann auch auf Estnisch und Lettisch. Einen Höhepunkt erlebte sie in den Epochen der Aufklärung und der nationalen Bewegungen, als die allgemeine bürgerliche Teilhabe immer dringender gefordert wurde. Nicht nur die Publizistik sowie die juristische und religiöse Gebrauchsliteratur, sondern auch die Dichtung hatten in der multikulturellen Gesellschaft des Baltikums eine politische Dimension.
