The Rhine: National Tensions, Romantic Visions
Of all European landscapes and regions, the Rhine is one of the most heavily overlaid with cultural and political meaning. Cradle of Romanticism, tourism, and the picturesque, bone of contention between the German and French spheres of cultural and geopolitical influence, the Rhine has attracted armies, artists, activists and tourists for centuries and has featured prominently the key writings of Europe’s literary and intellectual history from Byron to Lucien Febvre. This volume brings together eminent literary and cultural historians to present materials and analyses from various of the central nexus of European culture. Space and the Eighteenth-Century English Novel
In this challenging and illustrated study, first published in 1990, Simon Varey relates the idea of space in the major novels of Defoe, Fielding and Richardson to its use in the theory and practice of eighteenth-century architecture. Concepts of divine design, expressed in the work of philosophers and theologians, introduced an ideological element to the notion of space which gave it a heightened significance in contemporary thought. Professor Varey's central argument is that space becomes a political instrument used to establish conformity, assert power and give form to the aspirations of social classes. He draws on a wide range of architectural books, both English and European, and on the example of Bath (focusing in particular on its chief architect in the eighteenth century, John Wood). The discussion of novels such as Robinson Crusoe, Tom Jones and Clarissa examines narrative as a form of spatial design, the use of architectural imagery to describe people, and the political control of social space.

This interdisciplinary study examines the impact of the emerging awareness of historicity on the concepts of modernity, identity, and culture as they developed in German thought around 1800. It shows how this awareness determined the German notion of the priority of cultural identity. Für die meisten Niederländer und Flamen ist Österreich in erster Linie ein beliebtes Urlaubsland, dessen Bild von den Bergen Tirols, den Wiener Lipizzanern und den vielen, vielen Heurigen geprägt ist. Dass sich hinter den Bergen eine andere Welt findet, eine überaus vielfältige und in so manchem eigenständige Literatur, ist den wenigsten bewusst. Während sich die österreichische Herkunft Thomas Bernhards und Peter Handkes schon herumgesprochen haben dürfte, verbinden – abgesehen von einem Kreise der Eingeweihten – nur die wenigsten Niederländer und Flamen Franz Werfel, Stefan Zweig, Theodor Kramer, Christoph Ransmayr und viele andere mit der 1918 aus der Donaumonarchie hervorgegangenen, 1945 ein zweites Mal gegründeten Republik. Dass die Frage nach dem spezifischen Charakter der deutschsprachigen Literatur aus Österreich im Land ihres Entstehens sehr wohl ein Thema war und ist, ist nur eines der vielen Leitmotive im vorliegenden Band über die österreichische Literatur des 20. Jahrhunderts.
