Vibrations and Waves in Continuous Mechanical Systems

Vibrations and Waves in Continuous Mechanical Systems

The subject of vibrations is of fundamental importance in engineering and technology. Discrete modelling is sufficient to understand the dynamics of many vibrating systems; however a large number of vibration phenomena are far more easily understood when modelled as continuous systems. The theory of vibrations in continuous systems is crucial to the understanding of engineering problems in areas as diverse as automotive brakes, overhead transmission lines, liquid filled tanks, ultrasonic testing or room acoustics. Starting from an elementary level, Vibrations and Waves in Continuous Mechanical Systems helps develop a comprehensive understanding of the theory of these systems and the tools wi...

The Book of Names, Especially Relating to the Early Palatines and the First Settlers in the Mohawk Valley

When originally published in 1933, this classic work listed for the first time the names of the early Palatines of New York State, the original settlers of the Mohawk Valley, known as the "Gateway to the West." The estimated 20,000 names are classified, combined, and otherwise arranged to enable the researcher to identify Palatine immigrants in relation to specific categories of records. Among the important lists of names are the following: (1) The Kocherthal records of baptisms, marriages, and deaths, 1708-1719; (2) Palatine heads of families, from Gov. Hunter's Ration Lists, 1710-1714; (3) Lists of Palatines in 1709 (the four London lists of emigrants from Germany, most of whom emigrated to America); (4) Palatines remaining and newly arrived in New York, from the colonial census of 1710; (5) Names of Palatine children apprenticed by Gov. Hunter, 1710-1714; and (6) Various lists of Palatines in the colonial militia of New York.

IUTAM Symposium on Vibration Control of Nonlinear Mechanisms and Structures

During the last decades, the growth of micro-electronics has reduced the cost of computing power to a level acceptable to industry and has made possible sophisticated control strategies suitable for many applications. Vibration c- trol is applied to all kinds of engineering systems to obtain the desired dynamic behavior, improved accuracy and increased reliability during operation. In this context, one can think of applications related to the control of structures’ vib- tion isolation, control of vehicle dynamics, noise control, control of machines and mechanisms and control of ?uid-structure-interaction. One could continue with this list for a long time. Research in the ?eld of vibration ...

Structural Health Monitoring 2011

This 2-volume set of books, comprising over 2,700 total pages, presents 325 fully original presentations on recent advances in structural health monitoring, as applied to commercial and military aircraft (manned and unmanned), high-rise buildings, wind turbines, civil infrastructure, power plants and ships. One general theme of the books is how SHM can be used for condition-based maintenance, with the goal of developing prediction-based systems, designed to save money over the life of vehicles and structures. A second theme centers on technologies for developing systems comprising sensors, diagnostic data and decision-making, with a focus on intelligent materials able to respond to damage an...

Lists of Inhabitants of Colonial New York

This present work comprises all of the genealogical records in O'Callaghan's remarkable four-volume Documentary History of the State of New-York and contains a complete index of names, overcoming, for individuals unfamiliar with Dutch or German nomenclature, the confusion caused by variant spellings of family names. Prepared by Roseanne Conway, the index lists about 12,000 inhabitants of colonial New York-Dutch, English, and German.

Periodic Orbits, Stability and Resonances

Periodic Orbits, Stability and Resonances

The subjects of resonance and stability are closely related to the problem of evolution of the solar system. It is a physically involving problem and the methods available to mathematics today seem unsatisfactory to produce pure non linear ways of attack. The linearization process in both subjects is clearly of doubtful significance, so that, even if very restrictive, numerical solutions are still the best and more valuable sources of informations. It is quite possible that we know now very little more of the entire problem that was known to Poincare, with the advantage that we can now compute much faster and with much more precision. We feel that the papers collected in this Symposium have ...
