Lectures on Polytopes

Based on a graduate course at the Technische Universität, Berlin, these lectures present a wealth of material on the modern theory of convex polytopes. The straightforward exposition features many illustrations, and complete proofs for most theorems. With only linear algebra as a prerequisite, it takes the reader quickly from the basics to topics of recent research. The lectures introduce basic facts about polytopes, with an emphasis on methods that yield the results, discuss important examples and elegant constructions, and show the excitement of current work in the field. They will provide interesting and enjoyable reading for researchers as well as students.

Leadership is more.

Why, what for, how come? Who never asks, stays dumb! Every Sesame Street viewer knows that. And what ́s good for children can only benefit grownups. Which is why we have written down in this book our answers to the 27 most frequently asked questions put to us by leaders. Questions we have gleaned from our 20+ years of consulting activities throughout Europe. Leadership goes far beyond developing and implementing a strategy; is much more than learning models, instruments or techniques for leading your people. Truly remarkable, professional leadership encompasses a broad spectrum of subject matter - from distribution and sales to communication and education 4.0. But what do air pumps and a well-trained gluteus maximus have to do with quality leadership? And just how can you save the day? This book holds the answers to your questions!

Discrete and Computational Geometry

Discrete and Computational Geometry

The first DIMACS special year, held during 1989-1990, was devoted to discrete and computational geometry. More than 200 scientists, both long- and short-term visitors, came to DIMACS to participate in the special year activities. Among the highlights were six workshops at Rutgers and Princeton Universities that defined the focus for much of the special year. The workshops addressed the following topics: geometric complexity, probabilistic methods in discrete and computational geometry, polytopes and convex sets, arrangements, and algebraic and practical issues in geometric computation. This volume presents some of the results growing out of the workshops and the special year activities. Containing both survey articles and research papers, this collection presents an excellent overview of significant recent progress in discrete and computational geometry. The diversity of these papers demonstrate how geometry continues to provide a vital source of ideas in theoretical computer science and discrete mathematics as well as fertile ground for interaction and simulation between the two disciplines.

Applied Geometry and Discrete Mathematics

This volume, published jointly with the Association for Computing Machinery, comprises a collection of research articles celebrating the occasion of Victor Klee's 65th birthday in September 1990. During his long career, Klee has made contributions to a wide variety of areas, such as discrete and computational geometry, convexity, combinatorics, graph theory, functional analysis, mathematical programming and optimization, and theoretical computer science. In addition, Klee made important contributions to mathematics, education, mathematical methods in economics and the decision sciences, applications of discrete mathematics in the biological and social sciences, and the transfer of knowledge from applied mathematics to industry. In honour of Klee's achievements, this volume presents more than 40 papers on topics related to Klee's research. While the majority of the papers are research articles, a number of survey articles are also included. Mirroring the breadth of Klee's mathematical contributions, this book shows how different branches of mathematics interact. It is a fitting tribute to one of the leading figures in discrete mathematics.

Genomic Adaptation for Organohalide Respiration of Vinyl Chloride and Other Priority Pollutants by the Anaerobic Bacterium Dehalococcoides

Vinyl chloride (VC) is a widespread groundwater pollutant and Group 1 carcinogen. Microbial respiration of VC is both critical for complete remediation of chloroethenes in situ, and a unique physiology only observed by certain strains of Dehalococcoides. Two different genes independently encoding VC respiration in Dehalococcoides, vcrA and bvcA, were identified previously, each a member of the diverse family of reductive dehalogenase homologous genes, or rdhA. In this thesis I report that vcrA and bvcA are among a subset of putative 'foreign' rdhA with a low GC3 codon usage that favors the nucleotide T, even though tRNAs recognizing T-ending codons are categorically absent in Dehalococcoides...

Questions that arose from linear programming and combinatorial optimization have been a driving force for modern polytope theory, such as the diameter questions motivated by the desire to understand the complexity of the simplex algorithm, or the need to study facets for use in cutting plane procedures. In addition, algorithms now provide the means to computationally study polytopes, to compute their parameters such as flag vectors, graphs and volumes, and to construct examples of large complexity. The papers of this volume thus display a wide panorama of connections of polytope theory with other fields. Areas such as discrete and computational geometry, linear and combinatorial optimization, and scientific computing have contributed a combination of questions, ideas, results, algorithms and, finally, computer programs.

Toric Topology

Toric Topology

This book is about toric topology, a new area of mathematics that emerged at the end of the 1990s on the border of equivariant topology, algebraic and symplectic geometry, combinatorics, and commutative algebra. It has quickly grown into a very active area with many links to other areas of mathematics, and continues to attract experts from different fields. The key players in toric topology are moment-angle manifolds, a class of manifolds with torus actions defined in combinatorial terms. Construction of moment-angle manifolds relates to combinatorial geometry and algebraic geometry of toric varieties via the notion of a quasitoric manifold. Discovery of remarkable geometric structures on mo...
