Peter Newby was born in 1745 at Horncop Hall, near Kendal, Westmoreland. His parents were William Newby and Elizabeth Carter. He married Elizabeth Gant in 1768 in Woolton, Lancashire. They had five children. Elizabeth died in 1782. Follows his career as a schoolmaster, poet, dramatist, publisher and philanthropist.
