This is the third volume in a series which brings together a selection of the currently available lectures based on broad subject groupings. It focuses on two themes: process metallurgy, including the technical aspects of plant design and operation, and the organisation of the iron and steel industry, including its general structure and economic circumstances.Whilst there is occasional overlap with the themes of Volume 1 (materials properties/behaviour and materials applications) and Volume 2 (metallography and the structure of iron and steels), the current volume compliments the earlier ones and completes the original concept of five themes to bring the anthology up to the present day.

High Performance Metallic Materials for Cost Sensitive Applications

These proceedings examine the most recent advances and best practices in structural materials selection, design, and manufacturing for producing affordable components, with a focus on titanium, aluminum, and other advanced metallic materials. This volume discusses melting, casting, powder metallurgy, forging, forming, extrusion, and machining, as well as processing advances, innovative processing techniques, process modeling and materials by design, and new alloys, as well as related processing-microstructure-properties-performance-cost studies. This book can be purchased either on CD-ROM, or portable document format (PDF). PDF and CD-ROM books can be viewed using the free Adobe Acrobat Reader Program on Windows, Macintosh, Unix, and other systems. Access Acrobat Reader through the TMS Document Center at http://doc.tms.org. This modern book on investment casting fills a substantial gap in the literature of metal founding. The investment casting sector of the foundry industry has seen rapid growth; despite this the literature devoted specially to investment casting and its products has remained relatively sparse. Investment Casting has been produced by drawing upon the knowledge of authorities within or closely associated with the industry, in co-operation with the British Investment Casting Trade Association, examining the process and its products in a way which is useful both to the industry and to design engineers. To this end the earlier chapters are devoted to each of the main production stages from tooling to finishing, with health and safety treated separately, commensurate with its current importance.
