Zirconium in the Nuclear Industry
Annotation The 41 papers of this proceedings volume were first presented at the 13th symposium on Zirconium in the Nuclear Industry held in Annecy, France in June of 2001. Many of the papers are devoted to material related issues, corrosion and hydriding behavior, in-reactor studies, and the behavior and properties of Zr alloys used in storing spent fuel. Some papers report on studies of second phase particles, irradiation creep and growth, and material performance during loss of coolant and reactivity initiated accidents. Nuclear Fuel Cycle
The present book describes the various processes involved in different stages of the entire nuclear fuel cycle, which include exploration of uranium, thorium, and other nuclear materials, mining and milling of ores, conversion of the separated nuclear material into nuclear grade, fabrication of different types of nuclear fuels and their physical as well as chemical quality control, thermodynamics of the interaction among fuel and fission products during reactor operation, post irradiation examination, spent fuel reprocessing, radioactive waste management, accounting and control of nuclear materials, and safety aspects involved in handling and transportation of nuclear materials. The book provides the fundamental knowledge to the practicing nuclear scientists and engineers, young researchers, and postgraduate students interested in pursuing a career in nuclear industry in general and those engaged in human resource development in the field of nuclear science and technology in particular. It can also be prescribed as a textbook for a course on nuclear fuel cycle at postgraduate level.
Oxidation and the Testing of Turbine Oils
This work presents papers from a December 2005 symposium held in Norfolk, Virginia, and sponsored by ASTM Committee D2 on Petroleum Products and Lubricants and its Subcommittees D02.09 on Oxidation and D02.C0 on Turbine Oils. Contributors include equipment manufacturers, end users, lubricant producers, lubricant additive suppliers, test equipment manufacturers, and standard test method developers. They share information on industry trends, evolving technologies, and changing equipment designs and operating conditions, with a focus on how these factors impact oxidation. Some topics covered include turbine oil performance limits, a new form of the rotating pressure vessel oxidation test, and degradation mechanisms leading to sludge and varnish in modern turbine oil formulations. Athelred the Unready
Æthelred became king of England in 978, following the murder of his brother Edward the Martyr (possibly at the instigation of their mother) at Corfe. On his own death in April 1016, his son Edmund Ironside succeeded him and fought the invading Danes bravely, but died in November of the same year after being defeated at the battle of Assandun, leading to the House of Wessex being replaced by a Danish king, Cnut. Æthelred, in constrast to his predecessor and successor, reigned (except for a few months in 1013-14), largely unchallenged for thirty-eight years, despite presiding over a period which saw many Danish invasions and much internal strife. If not a great king, he was certainly a survivor whose posthumous reputation and nickname (meaning 'Noble Council the No Council') do him little justice. In Æthelred the Unready Ann Williams, a leading scholar on his reign, discounts the later rumours and misinterpretations that have dogged his reputation to construct a record of his reign from contemporary sources.
So We and Our Children May Live
Will we choose life for our children and the future of our planet? Everywhere we look, we see signs that all is not right with our earth—extreme temperatures and weather patterns wreak havoc, pollutants sour soils and waterways, and fires and floods ravage land and communities.
