Faaborg Museum and the Artists' Colony

Behind rolling hills, overlooking the fjord and the islands of Southern Funen in Denmark, lies the Faaborg Museum. With its boldly coloured walls and decorative tile floors made from local clay, the building has quite literally sprung from Funen's soil in a symbiosis of local nature and culture. Inside, visitors will find art by the 'Funen Painters', created during the period 1880 to 1928, when Faaborg was home to one of Denmark's pre-eminent artists' colonies. With their paintings of rural Funen, farmworkers and domestic scenes, the artists Peter Hansen, Fritz and Anna Syberg, Jens Birkholm and Johannes Larsen introduced new subject matter and new methods of painting to Danish art. Faaborg Museum and the Artists' Colony presents the history of Faaborg Museum, its architecture, collection and artists to international audiences for the first time. Lavishly illustrated, the book features architectural photographs and plans as well as pictures of the museum's art.

The Oxford Handbook of Light in Archaeology

Light plays a crucial role in mediating relationships between people, things, and spaces, yet lightscapes have been largely neglected in archaeology study. This volume offers a full consideration of light in archaeology and beyond, exploring diverse aspects of illumination in different spatial and temporal contexts from prehistory to the present.

Privacy at Sea

This book explores the idea of privacy at sea, from early sixteenth-century maritime expansions to nineteenth-century naval developments. In this period, the sea became a focal point of political and economic ambition as technological and cultural shifts enabled a more extensive exploration of maritime spaces and global coexistence at sea. The exploration of the sea and the conflicts arising from establishing control over maritime routes demanded a more nuanced distinction and negotiation between State and private efforts. Privateering, for example, became a bridge between the private enterprises and the State’s warfares or trade struggles, demonstrating that the sea required public contro...

Kay Fisker

Kay Fisker (1893-1965) is considered one of the most influential Danish architects of the twentieth century, and yet there has existed until now no in-depth English-language study of his works and writing. Published as part of the Bloomsbury Studies in Modern Architecture series, which brings to light the work of significant yet overlooked modernist architects, this book examines Fisker's key projects – from his early railway stations and innovative housing projects to the Danish Academy in Rome – and analyses his work as a historian and writer. Fisker's output is closely associated with the functional tradition, a hybridization of international modernism and regional architectural typologies, and this book shows how his architectural poetics can be understood as an amalgamation of an ideal order with the contingent conditions of landscapes and urban sites. Hybridization is not only a valuable notion for understanding Fisker, the book argues, it can also be applied to an understanding of modernist architecture as a whole, with its various expressions, agendas and tensions both regionally and internationally.

Histories of sculpture within the Nordic region are under-studied and the region?s influence upon and translation of influences from elsewhere in Europe remain insufficiently traced. This volume brings to light individual histories of sculptural mobility from the early modern period onwards. Examining the movement of sculptures, sculptors, practices, skills, styles and motifs across borders, through studios and public architectures, within popular and print culture and via texts, the essays collected here consider the extent to which the sculptural artwork is changed by its physical movement and its transfigurations in other media. How does the meaning and form of these objects performativel...

Danish designer and architect Arne Jacobsen would have been one hundred years old in 2002, and Absolutely Modern takes this centennial celebration as a wonderful excuse to look back on and also forward to his oeuvre and legacy. Jacobsen's most distinguishing characteristic was arguably his preoccupation with the Gesamtkunstwerk, with wanting to do it all, to apply design to everything, from the cellar to the roof, from silverware to the National Bank. Absolutely Modern looks at the range of objects and buildings he created throughout his career, and invites three international architects--Dominique Perrault, Gigon & Guyer, and Sejima and Nishizawa--to clarify his legacy against the background of their own practices.
