Below Ground Level

Any space that involves descending from our typical aboveground environment is a provocation to our sensory perceptions. Such hidden spaces evoke latent mythical images and confront us with the clash between nature and artifice in our built environment. This book explores the character, use and design of underground space as a space of its own. International examples of commercial premises, restaurants, sports facilities, subway stations, museums, churches, libraries, concert halls, houses and other building types form the core material. Interviews with many renowned designers including Norman Foster, Floris Alkemade (OMA) and Francine Houben (Mecanoo) convey the architects' own views on the subject. Essays reflect on the cultural aspects, planning conditions, design considerations, technical requirements and sustainability aspects of building below ground level. Chapters include: Urban Development, Architecture, Functions, Perception and Cognition, Constructions, Energy and Interior Climate.

Spatial and Transport Infrastructure Development in Europe

The Orient-East-Med Corridor is a key north-south transport corridor for Europe. Over its length of more than 2500 km, it connects the seaports of northern Germany with the Danube ports and Greek seaports. Seven capitals of EU member states are directly interlinked by the Corridor. At present however, it has genuine shortcomings in several aspects. The international working group Spatial and Transport Development in European Corridors: Example Corridor 22, Hamburg-Athens (2015-2018) trace the conditions for large scale, corridor oriented spatial and transport development in Europe and in particular along the Orient-East-Med Corridor. The contributions in the anthology also focus on the impor...

The challenge of growth in transport, especially in freight transport, and scarce resources in money, landscape and local opposition against new infrastructure investment require new solutions from transport policy. This book deals with these issues taking as an example the transport corridor Rotterdam-Genoa, one of the most heavily used in Europe. In 2010 the INTERREG project Code24 with partners from five European countries started with the aim to develop a transnational strategy to strengthen and to develop the corridor. The main objective was to accelerate and jointly develop the transport capacity of the entire corridor by ensuring optimal economic benefits and spatial integration while reducing negative impacts on the environment at local and regional level. These issues are highlighted in the book from an interdisciplinary perspective, taking into account spatial, economic, environmental and political aspects.

Today, new and unexpected challenges arise for Europe’s large array of existing dams, and fresh perspectives on the development of new projects for supporting Europe’s energy transition have emerged. In this context, the 12th ICOLD European Club Symposium has been held in September 2023, in Interlaken, Switzerland. The overarching Symposium theme was on the "Role of dams and reservoirs in a successful energy transition". The articles collected in this report book (consisting of a 250-page abstract book and a 1010-page full paper USB) cover the various themes developed during the symposium: - Dams and reservoirs for hydropower - Dams and reservoirs for climate change adaptation - Impact m...
