The Films of Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen
This collection of Laura Mulvey and Peter Wollen's film scripts vividly evokes the close connection between their influential work as theorists and their work as filmmakers. It includes scripts for all six of Mulvey and Wollen's collaborative films, Wollen's solo feature film, Friendship's Death (1987), and Mulvey's later collaborations. Raiding the Icebox
Raiding the Icebox is a kaleidoscopic review of the avant-garde and radical subcultures of the twentieth century, and explains how the most powerful artistic statements of the era redrew the line between high and low art. Beginning with an analysis of the role of Diaghilev and the Russian Ballet, Wollen argues that modernism has always had a hidden, suppressed side which cannot easily be absorbed into the master-narrative of modernity. Wollen reviews the hopes, fears and expectations of artists and critics such as the Bauhaus movement, as fascinated by Henry Ford's assembly line as they were by the Hollywood dream factory, concluding with Guy Debord's caustic dystopian vision of an all-consuming "Society of the Spectacle." Finally, Wollen chronicles the emergence of a subversive sensibility as he explores some of the unexpected new cultural forms which non-Western artists are taking as modernism enters into crisis at the beginning of a new century: reversing the rules of the game and raiding the icebox of the West.
Making Time
As light is to painting, so is time to video. For centuries, time in art had been connected to the idea of permanence, and then, since the 60s, performance. But where is time now? In an age when global events are shared worldwide in real time, artists have responded by producing works that challenge our conventional notions of time by altering clocks, memory, constancy, documentation, movements, and actions. Time, after all, is a universal language, yet it is perhaps the least commonly understood. Making Time attempts to clarify that gap. Beginning with many influential single-channel video works from the 60s and early 70s, including Andy Warhol's Empire and Gilbert & George's Singing Sculpture, Making Time traces time-based work through the present, juxtaposing these experimental works against narrative works from the same period. Essays by Peter Wollen, Adriano Pedrosa, and Amy Cappellazzo look into the past and present of time as a material in video and film.
