Experts translate the latest findings on embodied cognition from neuroscience, psychology, and cognitive science to inform teaching and learning pedagogy. Embodied cognition represents a radical shift in conceptualizing cognitive processes, in which cognition develops through mind-body environmental interaction. If this supposition is correct, then the conventional style of instruction—in which students sit at desks, passively receiving information—needs rethinking. Movement Matters considers the educational implications of an embodied account of cognition, describing the latest research applications from neuroscience, psychology, and cognitive science and demonstrating their relevance f...
This volume contains the proceedings of the 5th workshop on 'Dynamic Perception' which was held on November 18 - 19, 2004, at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics in Tübingen. As in the previ-ous meetings, the conference is characterised by its high degree of in-terdisciplinarity. The presentations cover the fields of computer science, psychology, neuroscience as well as biology. The common denominator of all contributions consists in the observation that the sensory systems of man, animals and robots have to solve similar tasks such as goal-directed behaviour, orientation within a 3D world or object identification, to name just a few.
Mental health has become a growing concern in today's society, with schools emerging as focal points for addressing this topic. The present volume takes this as a starting point to explore the relevance of curricula and competencies, texts and materials, (digital) culture and communication, and teacher education in the context of mental health and English language education. This, for instance, includes insights into interrelated topics such as gender, climate change, stress, and conspiracy theories. A variety of texts including multimodal novels, video games, and songs provides practical impulses for integrating mental health related topics into English lessons. As such, this volume brings together scholars from various fields who discuss the relationship between mental health issues and English as a foreign language learning from a variety of theoretical, empirical, and practice-oriented perspectives.
There is growing interest in the relationship between gender and entrepreneurial activity. In this book, 37 eminent scholars from diverse academic disciplines contribute cutting-edge research that addresses, from a gender perspective, three general areas of importance: key characteristics of entrepreneurs, key performance attributes of entrepreneurial firms, and the role of financial capital in the establishment and growth of entrepreneurial firms and in their growth.
Through Tara’s story and other service members and their families stories, we can learn that everyone must balance the demands of the system with the art of caring for oneself. Hyper focused on the failed systems, Tara would soon learn that she was disregarding the fact that her own system was overwhelmed and overstimulated. She nearly became a casualty herself. She would transition from the role of the mental health provider to the patient in a way she never saw coming. As a trained psychotherapist and seasoned Army Officer, she was motivated more than ever to expose the harsh realities plaguing our military today with respect to failed policies, toxic command climates, and a grossly negl...
