BMW K Series

While BMW motorcycles remain mostly associated with its R-series shaft-drive boxer twins, it's the K-series liquid-cooled 'multis' that have been – and remain – the German firm's most advanced, radical and downright wacky bikes of all. Launched in 1983 to propel BMW into a whole new era, the K-series has included some of the world's most innovative and interesting motorcycles. From the original liquid-cooled, fuel-injected K100, to the radically aerodynamic K1 of the 1980s; the ultra-powerful K1200RS and space age K1200LT of the 1990s; and the 'Duolever' K1200S and 6-cylinder K1600 of the 2000s and beyond, BMW's 'Ks' have always been special, but also so advanced and pioneering that they've helped shape the whole of modern motorcycling. BMW expert Phil West, author of BMW Airhead Twins and BMW GS, also published by Crowood, has again painstakingly researched their complete history, found pictures never published before and recounts the whole K-Series story in a comprehensive and engaging tale.

BMW Airhead Twins

No motorcycle manufacturer is more closely associated with one type of engine than BMW: the air-cooled boxer twin or 'airhead'. It was included in BMW's very first motorcycle in 1923 and virtually every machine the company made, of every type, from radical road bike to TT winner, to land speed record holder, to 1970s style icon and even to the creation of an all-new adventure bike class with the R 80 G/S, right up to the mid-1990s. Phil West celebrates the success of the BMW airhead twin motorcycles. This book, with over 290 photographs, includes a history of the company pre- and post-War; the personalities behind the development of the bikes; profiles of each of the 'R' bikes in turn, including detailed specification guides and production numbers. These wonderful machines are regularly celebrated and now BMW itself is harking back to them with an all-new series of machines.

The 1980s was a vibrant period of motorcycling in Britain. In bikes a golden era saw a dominance of Japanese bikes and evolution from old, twin shock 'UJMs' into racer-replicas, fully-faired tourers, screaming strokers and turbos. Behemoths like Suzuki's GSX1100 gave way to the Suzuki Katana and Kawasaki's revolutionary GPz900R. The mid-decade saw the first racer replica, Suzuki's GSX-R750, GP replica two-strokes like Yamaha's RD500 and turbo-charged follies such as Suzuki XN85. Yamaha's FZR1000 EXUP and Norton's F1 rotary sports came along. In bikesport, GPs were dominated by an American invasion of Kenny Roberts, Freddie Spencer and Eddie Lawson while Broton Dave Thorpe grabbed glory in world motocross. And on the street, hooligan 'LC Johnnys' evolved into Simpson Bandit wearing 'streetfighters' and day-glo bedecked road racers on GSXRs. All of this and more is remembered in Phil West's fascinating book.

Americans love to win. But when it comes to soccer, the world’s most popular sport, the US women’s team has delivered three World Cup victories in as many decades, while the men have not advanced past the quarter-finals in nearly ninety years. In October 2017, the US Men’s National Team (USMNT) startled fans by failing to qualify for the upcoming World Cup, an episode that led both USMNT head coach Bruce Arena and US Soccer Federation President Sunil Gulati to step down from their positions, and which launched a new era of reckoning for US Soccer as a whole. As the 2018 World Cup commences with the US sidelined, fans are becoming impatient: What will it take for the USMNT to finally ri...

Yamaha RD350LC/YPVS

The RD350LC/YPVS family of water-cooled, race-derived two-stroke 'screamers' has become a motorcycling icon of the 1980s. It was the first mass-production bike to use now commonplace monoshock rear suspension, and in racing it instantly became the production racer of choice. The LC marked the end of an era, as tightening emissions regulations ensured that it was the last of the middleweight, no-compromise performance two-strokes. This book describes the full developement, production and racing history of what soon became the dream bike for a generation of teenagers - nothing else came close.
