Exploring Northumberland History was born out of a deep-seated love of the heritage, history and landscape of this very special county. Its marvellous geography, its unique political position, its special place in the history of the north and the character of its lively inhabitants have woven together to produce that unique Northumbrian charisma. Northumberland is a huge county and was frequently described in early documents as a wasteland, and indeed, it suffered greatly as a buffer state between the continually warring kingdoms of England and Scotland - sometimes taking sides but in reality owing allegiance to neither. This new book is a clever blend of contemporary photographs and historical fact, coloured with old folk-stories and mystery to lead us on an exciting exploration through the history of England's most northerly county.

Philip Guston?s late figurative paintings were met with overwhelmingly negative critical response when first shown at Marlborough Gallery in New York City in October 1970. After the opening, Guston fled to Italy with his wife, spending eight months at the American Academy in Rome. The following spring, Guston returned to a wounded America, still at war in Vietnam, devastated by the assassinations of its leaders, and divided by antiwar protests and the social and political upheavals begun in the 1960s. It was Richard Nixon?s first term as president.0Guston?s outpouring of satirical drawings was inspired partly by conversations with his friend Philip Roth, at work on his own scathing Nixon sat...

Since the early nineteenth century, the things which Black South Africans have had in their homes have changed completely. They have adopted things like tables, chairs, knives, forks, spoons, plates, cups and saucers, iron pots, beds, blankets, European clothing, and later electronic apparatus. Thus they claimed modernity, respectability and political inclusion. This book is the first systematic analysis of this development. It argues that the desire to possess such goods formed a major part of the drive behind the anti-apartheid struggle, and that the demand to consume has significantly influenced both the economy and the politics of the country.
