From Toleration to Expulsion
On April 6, 1948, a significant portion of the population of the village of Ecsny in Somogy County, Hungary, was expelled from their homeland. This was the result of Protocol XIII of the Potsdam Declaration of 1945 calling for the orderly and humane transfer of German populations now living in Poland, Czechoslovakia, and Hungary. The families involved were descendants of German settlers who began to arrive in what would become the village of Ecsny as early as 1754. In the past, the steep, majestic, heavily forested, and somewhat impregnable Josefsberg was the lair of robber bands and brigands following the expulsion of the Turks from the area and all of Hungary. In the future, it would become known as the Jószefhegy. It is one of the highest elevations in northeastern Somogy County. 250 Jahre Stammbuchgeschichte. Inskriptionen und Bildschmuck
Seibold stellt in seinem Buch 62 Freundschaftsalben vor, die während eines Zeitraums von etwa 250 Jahren (Mitte 16. Jahrhundert bis zum Beginn des 19. Jahrhundert) geführt wurden. Anhand dieser Beispiele wird versucht, die Gesetzmäßigkeiten, welche der Stammbuchpraxis zugrunde liegen, darzustellen. Das findet seinen Niederschlag vor allem in einer Untersuchung des Beziehungsgeflechts zwischen den Eignern der Bücher und den Personen, welche von ihnen um Widmungen gebeten wurden, bis hin zu einer Würdigung der technisch-materiellen und organisatorischen Rahmenbedingungen. Die Niederschriften wurden häufig ergänzt um Zeichnungen, welche zumeist in Gouachetechnik ausgeführt wurden. Hier gelangen Wappen, Alltagsgeschehen, Allegorisches und Mythologisches zur Abbildung, womit auch die Frage nach den ausführenden Künstlern virulent ist. Damit wird der Horizont der Stammbuchforschung anhand neuer Erfahrungsobjekte erweitert, bis hin zu einer Quellenanalyse.
