La Fédération gymnastique et sportive des patronages de France est fondée à la fin du XIXe siècle pour aider à la reconquête des provinces perdues en 1871. Elle est aussi perçue par l'Église catholique comme un moyen de catéchisation de la jeunesse ouvrière. L'ambition de cet ouvrage est d'analyser l'évolution identitaire de la FGSPF, de 1914 au lendemain de la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Rupture ou continuité? Les conflits mondiaux ont influencé la perception de l'utilité même de la Fédération sportive catholique dans la nation et dans l'Église. En outre, cette " histoire " des sections gymniques et sportives des patronages catholiques, comme l'Association de la Jeunesse Auxerroise ou le Cercle Saint-Pierre de Limoges, est dépendante de multiples facteurs religieux, politiques, économiques, sociaux, sportifs et démographiques. On a du mal, aujourd'hui, à imaginer qu'une telle structure ait pu réunir, en juillet 1923, près de 30 000 gymnastes sur les Champs-Élysées, qui défilèrent, encadrés par des prêtres et des évêques, au pas cadencé. Ce livre permet de mieux comprendre l'histoire d'une fédération sportive affinitaire, inscrite dans son temps.

Il insiste sur les qualités de visionnaire et de pilote requises pour exercer cette fonction.
