The hemodynamic evaluation of patients with acute circulatory failure and respiratory failure has in the past usually been performed using invasive procedures but in recent years less invasive monitoring devices have been introduced. Echocardiography can be used for both the diagnosis and the management of circulatory and respiratory failure. This book provides all the essential information required by readers in order to perform optimal hemodynamic management of the critically ill based on echocardiographic guidance. After an introductory section on basic principles, hemodynamic assessment using echocardiography is discussed in detail. Echocardiography and Cardiovascular Function: Tools for the Next Decade
For over a quarter of a century, echocardiography has made an unparalleled contribution to clinical cardiology as a major tool for real-time imaging of cardiac dynamics. Echocardiography is widely used to assess cardiac function, and provides noninvasive information which is invaluable for the diagnosis of various disease states. Added Value of 3D Imaging in the Diagnosis and Prognostication of Patients with Right Ventricular Dysfunction
Right ventricular (RV) function has proven to be a prognostic factor in heart failure with reduced and preserved left ventricular ejection fraction or in pulmonary arterial hypertension. RV function is also a cornerstone in managing relatively novel clinical issues, such as mechanical circulatory support devices or grown-up congenital heart diseases. Despite the notable amount of circumferentially oriented myofibers in the subepicardial layer of the RV myocardium, the non-longitudinal motion directions are often neglected in the everyday assessment of RV function. The complex RV contraction pattern, however, incorporates distinct mechanical components. 3D imaging may enable capturing subtle RV dysfunction, which can be undetectable by conventional methods. Novel 3D-based parameters may allow an earlier diagnosis and better risk stratification of numerous cardiac and primarily non-cardiac diseases.
