Goethe's Faust
Faust has been called the fundamental icon of Western culture, and Goethe's inexhaustible poetic drama is the centerpiece of its tradition in literature, music and art. In recent years, this play has experienced something of a renaissance, with a surge of studies, theater productions, press coverage and public discussions. Reflecting this renewed interest, leading Goethe scholars in this volume explore the play's striking modernity within its theatrical framework. Re-interpreting Brecht
This volume offers a fresh appraisal of the importance of Bertolt Brecht's theory and practice through the documentation of his influence on other dramatists and directors, the examination of how his plays have been interpreted on stage and how his theories have been modified by his followers, and through a selection of the most challenging recent critical approaches to his work. The Hermeneutics of Hell
This collection of essays analyzes global depictions of the devil from theological, Biblical, and literary perspectives, spanning the late Middle Ages to the 21st century. Goethe's Faust I
In March 2014, the University of Delaware’s Resident Ensemble Players staged the first Part of Goethe’s Faust, adapted and directed by Heinz-Uwe Haus, which forms the centrepiece and raison d’être of this book. This book tracks the creative process of Haus’s adaptation of the play and his attempts to elicit responses from his international networks to his question: how is Goethe’s Faust relevant today? It brings together comments from stage and costume designers as they brought their own creativity and understanding of the audience to bear on the play, and presents a brief record of the production itself, through stage directions and the photography of Bill Browning. The book then explores the reactions the production has elicited amongst some of its audience.
Exceptions and Rules
This book examines the Brechtian influence on Roger Planchon's three stagings of Brecht's The Good Person of Szechwan (July 1954; October 1954; December 1958). The meaning of a Brechtian mise en scène is determined by an analysis of the Berliner Ensemble production of the same play (1957). A comparison of these stagings not only reveals the clash between the German and French theatrical traditions but the German mise en scène also provides a point of reference which underlines the similarities and differences between Planchon's and Brecht's staging methods.

Bordered Identities in Language, Literature, and Culture
Cameroon’s composite state of postcoloniality inevitably burdened it with a linguistic and pedagogic culture that changed the eager student into a centripetal mimic of the colonial imagination. Recent events in the country, especially relating to the Anglophone Problem, have spotlighted the need to revisit this space, which has been over-politicised into what Anglophone Cameroonians see as a state of hypnosis. Given the clash between postcolonial consciousness and the globalizing forces of late capitalism, a necessary meeting point had to be negotiated in linguistic and pedagogic contexts, to (re)affirm the identity problematic in Cameroon, and in the interpretation of colonial voices in literary texts.
