Expanding at an average rate of 6.4% per annum since the mid-2000s, Peru’s economic growth has been remarkable, but also heavily dependent on one sector. Driven by a sharp rise in commodity prices, the mining industry spurred Peru’s economy to the fastest sustained growth rate in Latin America during much of the past decade.The end of the commodities supercycle however, saw economic growth slow down substantially over the course of 2014, with the central bank revising growth projections to 3.1% in mid-October. In a bid to stimulate growth, the government has intensified diversification efforts and introduced a series of measures aimed at promoting investment. The current economic slowdown, attributable in part to delays in some major mining developments, is generally seen as a temporary one, and growth is expected to pick up again in 2015. While mining will remain the backbone of the Peruvian economy - in particular from 2016 and beyond as several large-scale copper projects come on-line - other sectors, including industry and tourism, should begin to play increasingly important roles.

Productive development policies (PDPs) are notoriously hard. They involve a daunting level of technical detail, require public-private collaboration, are in constant danger of capture, and demand time consistency hard to achieve in a politically volatile region. Nevertheless, the potential of PDPs to revitalize the regionâs economic performance and spur productivity growth cannot be ignored. This book takes an in-depth look at 17 cases involving productive development agencies from Argentina, Brazil, Costa Rica and Uruguay, identifying key features of institutional design and agency-level practices that make success more likely in this difficult policy arena. Careful study of these experiences might help successful productive development policies gain currency across the region. The cases in this book should not be seen as the exceptions that prove the rule of lackluster PDP performance, but rather as examples that demonstrate the rule can be broken.
This book explains why governments respond differently to macroeconomic problems and why necessary reforms are sometimes delayed until a serious financial crisis erupts. It argues that voter vulnerability to different reform strategies varies, and that these vulnerabilities influence the type and timing of governments' policy responses to economic crises. Empirical analyses at both the individual level across a broad range of countries and case studies of national policy responses to financial and economic crises in Asia and Eastern Europe support the argument.
Political economists consider the political and economic factors that affect a country's choice of monetary institutions. Recent analysis by political economists of monetary institution determinants in different countries has been limited by the fact that exchange rate regimes and central bank institutions are studied in isolation from each other, without examining how one institution affects the costs and benefits of the other. By contrast, the contributors to this volume analyze the choice of exchange rate regime and level of central bank independence together; the articles (originally published in a special issue of International Organization) constitute a second generation of research on the determinants of monetary institutions. The contributors consider both economic and political factors to explain a country's choice of monetary institutions, and examine the effect of political processes in democracies, including interest group pressure, on the balance between economic and distributional policy.
