The Primacy of the Image in Northern Art 1400-1700: Essays in Honor of Larry Silver is an anthology of 42 essays written by distinguished scholars on current research and methodology in the art history of Northern Europe of the late medieval and early modern periods. Written in tribute to Larry Silver, Farquhar Professor of the History of Art at the University of Pennsylvania, the topics are inspired by Professor Silver’s renowned scholarship in these areas: Early Netherlandish Painting and Prints; Sixteenth-Century Netherlandish Painting; Manuscripts, Patrons, and Printed Books; Dürer and the Power of Pictures; Prints and Printmaking; and Seventeenth-Century Painting. Studies of specific artists include Hans Memling, Albrecht Dürer, Hans Baldung Grien, Hieronymus Bosch, Pieter Bruegel, Hendrick Goltzius, and Rembrandt.
Complaint Handling in the Rehabilitation of Aceh and Nias
An effective system for complaint handling is a key element of a good development project. This reader presents the experiences and lessons learned in handling complaints under the Asian Development Bank-assisted Earthquake and Tsunami Emergency Support Project in Indonesia, and similar initiatives supported by other organizations, in the rehabilitation of Aceh and Nias following the disasters there in December 2004 and March 2005. The book will contribute to capacity building for complaint handling within local governments in Aceh and Nias as well as provide a wider sharing of experiences within governments and nongovernment organizations in Indonesia and beyond. A summary of lessons and recommendations draws together common strands from the 18 papers presented.
Names of Foreigners Who Took the Oath of Allegiance to the Province and State of Pennsylvania, 1727-1775. with the Foreign Arrivals, 1786-1808
In 1727, the Pennsylvania Provincial Council passed a law requiring all "foreign" immigrants (i.e. those of non-British origin) to swear an oath of allegiance to the Crown. Lists of these immigrants were originally assembled for publication in the Pennsylvania Archives (Ser. 2, Vol. XVII), and they are reprinted here without change. This work, then, is an exhaustive list of "foreigners"-mostly Germans-who immigrated into the Province and, later, the State of Pennsylvania between the years 1727 and 1775 and again during the years 1786-1808. More to the point, it is a collection of ships' passenger lists, in many cases the lists being transcribed in entirety, with Captains' lists of passengers running up to the relatively late year of 1808. Along with the full name of the immigrant, including the names of all males over the age of sixteen, since that was the age they were obliged to take the oath, such information is given as name of ship, date of arrival, port of origin, and, in some instances, ages, names of wives, and names of children. An exhaustive index of surnames, running to more than 100 pages, contains about 35,000 references.
The Greening of Aid
The development of poor countries has so often meant the export of Northern technology for ambitious schemes designed to make money the latest giant dam, oil refinery, logging process or pesticide factory. But such 'aid' has frequently been ecologically destructive and its crippling cost has ended up making life immeasurably worse for those it was supposed to help. Using examples from Asia, Africa, the Caribbean, Central and South America, this book shows there are forms of development that allow people to control their own resources while improving their condition and enhancing their environment. The 33 case studies from agriculture, fishing and industry were commissioned by the International Institute for Environment and Development from people closely involved in the projects, with overviews by Robert Chambers, John Michael Kramer, Marilyn Carr, David Butcher and Yves Cabannes.
