Pinole
Pinole began as the cornerstone of a massive land grant nearly 200 years ago and grew to become an economic center of early Contra Costa County. Today it is a diverse and public-spirited small city with a high regard for, and interest in, its heritage. Pinole was named for the gruel (penole or pinolli) made from seeds, grain, and acorns given by welcoming Native Americans to explorers in the Pedro Fages expedition in 1772. Pinole's rich commercial and farming history--made possible by its access to San Pablo Bay and by the convergence of two railroads that ran through the heart of the community--is chronicled here with numerous photographs from the latter part of the 19th century through 2009, recalling buildings, people, and events that still live in the hearts of the city's modern-day residents.

Pinole Through Time
Pinole is a small city with a very big history. Pinole holds the unique distinction of having the oldest name in Contra Costa County. The area's first fast food, "pinolli," originated here with the 1772 Spanish discovery. Since then, the landscape has changed from nineteenth century cattle round-ups at Rancho El Pinole to twenty-first century round-ups of laptops, iPads, and smartphones at local eateries. The last grizzly bear disappeared from here in 1848. But the last dinosaur still exists from the extinct Pinole Midget Golf course. Pinole's appealing geography of bay, fertile valleys, and favorable climate has attracted a multi-cultural stream of newcomers through time. From gala Fourth of July parades of the early 1900s to the Fiesta del Pinole pageants of the 1960s, Pinole has always known how to celebrate its heritage and the contributions of its citizens. This book captures the images of many of those moments of celebration as Pinole emerged from a sleepy village into a dynamic city.
Hercules
The history of explosives manufacturing in Hercules began in 1879, when the California Powder Works acquired a site on San Pablo Bay, 20 miles northeast of San Francisco. The powder works, subsequently owned by Dupont and the Hercules Powder Company, produced one of the first internationally branded products: Hercules dynamite. It became the world’s leading producer of TNT during World War I. The town of Hercules was incorporated in 1900, and for nearly 75 years its population remained under 300. The company-owned village had no retail district, but its employee clubhouse was the anchor for the city’s social life. After the explosives plant closed, buildings comprising a small historic district were restored, while a diverse residential suburb grew rapidly around it. Hercules chronicles the city’s industrial past and a vanishing way of life.
